About the workshop

This two-day equivalent workshop will allow teachers a deeper understanding of the theoretical foundations of reading and spelling acquisition and its disorders as well as how to best assess students who struggle with reading and spelling. The workshop will be split into 6 sessions, delivered over 4 on-demand video series and 2 live webinars. Throughout the sessions, we will discuss how the tests and results can be used towards NCCD documentation. Participants will be given access to all relevant tests that will be discussed and utilised throughout the course.

Session 1: Learners will access a series of recordings, where they will be introduced to theoretical models of reading that can guide their choices of assessments for primary school students who struggle to learn to read.

Session 2: In these recordings, participants will learn how to choose the most appropriate tests when assessing and monitoring reading progress. We will practise administration, scoring, and interpretation of relevant tests. After Session 2, learners will get an opportunity to trial these tests with their students. Note, if you aren’t able to test students, other options will be discussed.

Session 3: In this live webinar, learners will have the opportunity to debrief and ask follow-up questions regarding the practical work assigned after Session 2.

Session 4: Leaners will access recordings and other online contents, introducing them to theoretical models of spelling that can guide their choices of assessments for primary school students who struggle to learn to spell.

Session 5: Using online contents, learners will focus on administration, scoring, and interpretation of spelling tests. We will also discuss possible testing schedules that can be applied across a school. After Session 5, workshop participants will get an opportunity to trial these tests with their students. Note, if you aren’t able to test students, other options will be discussed.

Session 6: In this live workshop, learners will be provided with the opportunity to reflect on the practical work completed after Session 5, and allow learners to deepen their understanding of the assessment process.
