By the end of this course, teachers will have been introduced to the evidence base for teaching phonics, relevant linguistic terminology and some of the most effective instructional techniques. We will also highlight NSW’s new phonics syllabus. We will examine different scope and sequences and their important role in systematic teaching. Course attendees will learn to write effective teaching sequences for simple (e.g., m, a, s) and complex (e.g., dge, oi) phonics code. We will discuss the role of decodable readers in phonics instruction and examine how to effectively use these readers in the classroom. Learners will complete some consolidation work based on the session contents. Session 2: This live session is dedicated to the teaching of the simple phonics code (e.g., m, a, s) and blending. Learners will write their own lesson plans for teaching simple phonics code following this session. Session 3: This live session is dedicated to the teaching of complex code phonics (e.g., dge, oi). Learners will write their own lesson plans for teaching complex phonics code following this session. Session 4: This live lesson is dedicated to additional notes on teaching the complex phonics code and teaching of frequent irregular words. Learners will complete consolidation work at home.
