About the workshop

This course will provide learners with an overview of cognitive models of reading, and how these models can guide carefully structured assessments and programming for individually-targeted interventions. This course would be beneficial for psychologists, speech pathologists, primary general education teachers, special education teachers, learning enhancement teachers, school counsellors, or any other professional that is interested in learning more about how to assess and treat reading difficulties. Participants will be given access to all relevant tests that will be discussed and utilised throughout the course.

Session 1: Learners will access online contents in their own time. The contents will cover fundamental theoretical background for this course, including the dual route model of reading, definitions of dyslexia and different types of dyslexia.

Session 2: This live webinar will provide a theoretical and practical overview of standardised tests and assessment approaches that allow identification of reading difficulties as defined by cognitive models of reading. Learners will deepen their understanding of how to document the exact types of difficulties poor readers are experiencing at the time of testing. The precise descriptions allow for better mapping onto targeted intervention.

Session 3: This live webinar will focus on interventions for reading difficulties. Learners will map assessment outcomes to interventions. Learners will then be provided with detailed overviews for a variety of treatment and intervention programs and approaches for commonly seen reading difficulties. Please note the goal is a deeper understanding of these techniques. However, if learners are interested in guidance as to how to actually use the different intervention approaches, we suggest to consult our other, more detailed workshops on these topics (e.g., teaching phonics, morphology, vocabulary, comprehension).

Session 4: This live 1-hour follow-up webinar provides an opportunity to consolidate knowledge acquired in the course and to ask any remaining questions.
