Description | Overview Dates:
Presenter: Associate Professor Saskia Kohnen Early bird price: $451 (register by the 14th of August to take advantage of this discounted rate) Standard price: $530 (discounts available for multiple enrolments, MQ staff, and MQ students) Course materials: A course workbook including all materials will be provided prior to the workshop About the workshop This course will provide learners with an overview of cognitive models of spelling, and how these models can guide carefully structured assessments and programming for individually-targeted interventions. This course would be beneficial for psychologists, speech pathologists, primary general education teachers, special education teachers, learning enhancement teachers, school counsellors, or any other professional that is interested in learning more about how to assess and treat spelling difficulties. Participants will be given access to all relevant tests that will be discussed and utilised throughout the course. Session 1: Learners will access online contents in their own time. The recordings will cover the dual route model of spelling, discuss the differences between spelling and reading and introduce learners to different types of spelling difficulties. Session 2: This live webinar will provide a theoretical and practical overview of standardised tests and assessment approaches that allow identification of spelling difficulties as defined by cognitive models of spelling. Learners will deepen their understanding of how to document the exact types of difficulties poor spellers are experiencing at the time of testing. The precise descriptions allow for better mapping onto targeted intervention. Session 3: This live webinar will focus on interventions for spelling difficulties. Learners will learn how to map assessment outcomes to interventions and treatment. Learners will then be provided with detailed overviews for a variety of treatment and intervention programs and approaches for commonly seen spelling difficulties. Please note the goal is a deeper understanding of these techniques. However, if learners are interested in guidance as to how to actually use the different intervention approaches, we suggest to consult our other, more detailed workshops on these topics (e.g., teaching phonics, morphology, vocabulary, etc.). Session 4: This live 1-hour follow-up webinar provides an opportunity to consolidate knowledge acquired in the course and to ask any remaining questions. This workshop is now full and registrations have been closed. Please put your name on the waitlist below to hear about when we will offer this workshop next. |
