Death of Lieut. John M'Connell from dysentery at Batticaloa.
25 January:
Arrival of the headquarters of 73rd in Trincomalee (from Colombo) in
the transports London, John and Brilliant - under the command of Lt. Col. O'Connell.
May:
Major James Vallance proceeded to Batticaloa to relieve a detachment of the
19th Regiment - which marched to Katabowa.
18 May:
Arrival in Ceylon of Ensign Trydell on Surat Castle.
6 September:
Death of Lieut. Hugh Holmes at Hambantota.
30 September:
Death of Lieut. Mark Lidwell at Batticaloa.
1 November:
Death of Capt. Henry Glenholme in Kandy from fever.
8 November:
Death of Ensign Trydell at Badulla.
24 November:
Major General Jackson handed over command of the Trincomalee
District to Lt. Col. O'Connell - and left for Galle.
January - December:
Total casualties: death of three hundred and fifty-six men (including at least 6 officers) Only one (1) officer (Lieut. John Maclaine) and 20 men died in combat or
from wounds in battle - the remainder were the victims of tropical disease.
Distinguished military service near Badullah by Lance-Corporal Richard
McLoughlin, Privates John Wilson, Christopher Sheppard and William Connor. All
four men were awarded specially-commissioned gallantry medals but were dead of
fever before receipt.
