GRANTS

CSIRO program

Jordie Pettit, from the Macquarie Law School, has been accepted as a research fellow in CSIRO’s International Hydrogen Collaboration Program. The $75,000 grant will provide support for Jordie’s research project titled ‘Enabling global Hydrogen Collaboration between Australia and the Netherlands (Project HyCAN).’ Project HyCAN investigates the potential of hydrogen valleys (the Netherlands) and hydrogen hubs (Australia) as a regulatory pathway to scale supply and demand of renewable hydrogen through common user interface. The research will be based in the Netherlands and involve close collaboration with Ruven and the GCELS team at the University of Groningen, as well as industry and government stakeholders in both Australia and the Netherlands.

Joint Global PhD outcomes announced

Macquarie University and the University of St Andrews recently announced the outcomes of a new joint venture to create six co-funded PhD projects supporting the mutual research priority of sustainability. Each project will have funding to recruit a doctoral student. This will be a fully funded 3.5-year joint PhD scholarship position. This funding is available to new Australian, UK or international doctoral applicants starting their degree in September or October 2025 who meet the entry requirements of both universities. Congratulations to Dr Andrew Burridge, from the Macquarie School of Social Sciences, for the project ‘Migrant and Refugee Welcome: Achieving Social Sustainability Through Local Governance’ and Associate Professor Mianna Lotz, from the Department of Philosophy, for the project ‘Pro-natalist government policies and the ethics of procreation in the climate crisis.’

James Martin Institute for Public Policy

Dr Madeline Taylor, from the Macquarie Law School, will work with Charles Sturt University on a trailblazing project funded by the James Martin Institute for Public Policy to ensure sustained benefits in regional and remote communities at the centre of the energy transition in NSW. This multidisciplinary research will create a collaborative platform between research academics, policy makers from the NSW Government, communities, and NGOs for the first time. The project will delve into best practice policies to overcome social license barriers while creating intergenerational social benefits. The project applies socio-legal methodologies to gather qualitative and quantitative data to accelerate a justice-driven net zero transition; deepen economic inclusion of landholders and communities while strengthening social license with energy proponents; and drive greater equity in the distribution of wealth in regional communities
