About

The Centre for Media History was established in 2007, with inaugural Director Professor Bridget Griffen-Foley. The Centre remains Australia’s only research centre dedicated to conducting research on media history.

The Centre works with industry to uncover and investigate the history of the rapidly changing media and communications landscape. Its members include award-winning scholars and media practitioners who engage with industry and the community to create innovative historical works. The Centre hosts events, from major conferences and public lectures, to intimate workshops and masterclasses. It provides world-class databases and other electronic resources designed to preserve and make available our media heritage, and works closely with equivalent centres throughout the world.

Members and associate members conduct research into mass media history, as well as online media and social media. The history of media arts and electronic arts is also researched. Media history is considered as part of research in literary history, publishing history and art history. Members and associate members incorporate elements of media history in works of cultural history, intellectual history, history informed by feminism or queer theory, postcolonialism and critical race theory, and digital humanities.

A list of publications and media productions since 2017 by members and associate members can be found at Publications.

Online resources provided by the Centre are found at Resources.
