May 16.
Arrived from England The General Elliot/ East Indiaman, Commanded
by Capt. Drummond, being the first arrival
from Europe this Season; I received no letters by her; she brings
certain accounts of the Kings dangerous Indisposition or madness; of
which we had received imperfect accounts some time before. — A
Ship arrived from Bengal this day also which brought us the letters that
came out in the Swallow Pacquet [sic] to Bengal last autumn from
England – I received these letters, from my Aunt Mrs. Mc.Laine of Lochbuy,
Brother Charles, and Capt. Lundin of Auchy.; all of
which were wrote before I sailed from England, and which I should have
received there. —
May 19.
There was a very Grand General Subscription Union Ball and Supper, given
this Evening at St. George's Gardens; every one
being obliged, by the Rules and Regulations made, to appear Masqued
[sic] and in character till the Dancing commenced; – I went in the
character of a Highlander, dressed and accoutred in the full and
Complete Highland Garb; which I procured from Lieut. Geo. Mc.Kenzie of the
75th. Highland Regiment – I danced with
Miss Rose. —
