2019: “Deviant Expertise and Malicious Thievery: Markers, Makers, and Illicit Artefacts on the Move”
Creative imposition is a fundamental part of the process of interpreting the past. And yet, folk understanding of the historian’s task admit no room for this rich dynamic between known and unknown. The idea that the past is made and made through our engagement with it seems to threaten the integrity of our sense of where we come from and who we are.
The “Deviant Expertise and Malicious Thievery” showcased research from Macquarie staff and students, and our overseas partners into the vanity of our confidence in scientific technique and expertise, and the true value of looted or forged artefacts packaged up with false declarations of authenticity.
2018: “The Spectacle of Science: Humanities at the Crossroads of Innovation”
With a focus on the intersection between Arts and Science, the “Spectacle of Science” showcase highlighted the way humanities methods have been used to propel and communicate scientific discovery. Each project represented the integration of scientific and humanities methodologies for the transformation of our understanding of the world and our place within it.
2017: “Authenticity of Experience: History and Gaming”
Gaming is a gateway into another world, allowing us to travel in back time, access interactive history and effectively participate in these events. Gaming provides the wider public with the opportunity for authentic experiences of past environments and situations. The “History and Gaming” showcase analysed how this dialogue between the present and the past impacts our view of history, and what truly happens when we gamify history.
