Master of Biotechnology Course Director

Professor Anwar Sunna

Professor Anwar Sunna is Course Director of the Master of Biotechnology and Unit Convenor of MBiotech Foundation unit BMOL6401 – Microbiology and Molecular Biology. He has been working predominantly in multidisciplinary and industrially-oriented research for the last 15 years, particular in the area of nanobiotechnology and synthetic biology. Professor Sunna’s research is strongly driven by current biotechnological and biomedical challenges, in particular in the area of biomolecule immobilisation and bioconjugation, inorganic materials biofunctionalisation, bioimaging, flow cytometry and pathogen labelling and detection.

Our academics and leading researchers

Dr Karol Binkowski

Dr Karol Binkowski is Unit Convenor of MBiotech Foundation unit STAT6170 Introductory Statistics (S2). Dr Binkowski is a Teaching & Leadership academic and a Lecturer in Statistics at the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. He completed a Master of Science in Mathematics at Jagiellonian University in Poland, followed by a PhD in Statistics at Macquarie University. After gaining seven years of experience as a Quantitative Analyst at Westpac Institutional Banking, he returned to academia and has taught statistics, undergraduate and postgraduate, including large enrolment units, in both face-to-face and online delivery modes.

Dr Rachel Dudaniec

Dr Rachael Dudaniec is Unit Convenor of MBiotech Foundation unit BIOL6110. She leads the Landscape Genetics Lab in the School of Natural Sciences, which combines field-collected spatial and ecological data with genomic sequencing approaches to address the effects of environmental change on gene flow and local adaptation in natural populations. Her research uncovers the effects of environmental conditions on genetic connectivity, physiological and evolutionary processes within and across species, particularly in insects responding to climate change.

Professor Paul Haynes

Professor Paul Haynes is Unit Convenor of MBiotech Core units MOLS8212 Proteomics Technologies and Applications, MOLS8902 research experience, and MOLS8001 Selected Topics in Molecular Sciences. He is the Director of Higher Degree Research, a Professor in the School of Natural Sciences specialising in plant and environmental proteomics, and a member of the Australian Research Council (ARC) College of Experts, which requires playing a major role in grant assessments and policy development.

Dr Su Su Thae Hnit

Dr Su Su Thae Hnit is Unit Convenor of MBiotech Foundation unit CHEM6201 Analysis and Measurement. Dr Hnit’s research interest is identifying the chemical components of plants with the ability of impeding cancer cell proliferation for treatment and prevention of cancer. She is working on developing innovative technology to detect the protein targets of chemicals in a rapid and sensitive manner by surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and identifying the intracellular location of proteins interacting with chemicals in various types of cancer cells using proteomics tools.

Senior Lecturer Paul Jaschke

Senior Lecturer Paul Jaschke is Unit Convenor of MBiotech Foundation unit BMOL6231 Advanced Biochemistry and Cell Biology and Core Zone Unit MOLS8411 – Molecular Genomics Analysis and Design. Dr Jaschke’s research in synthetic biology and virology includes next-generation CRISPR methods and improving phage for therapeutic use against uropathogenic E. coli. From 2017 – 2021, Jaschke was CSO of the startup Hyperdrive Science which provided drug target identification services to pharmaceutical companies using phage.

Dr Nino Kordzakhia

Dr Nino Kordzakhia is Unit Convenor of MBiotech Core unit STAT8830 – Statistical Methods in Bioinformatics. She is Senior Lecturer in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. Her research expertise is based on her broad experience in the development of statistical methodologies applicable to industrial and interdisciplinary research problems. The current research projects include: Modifications of Kolmogorov-Smirnov test statistics and their applications in gene set enrichment analysis; Robust statistical methods for classification of preclinical Dementia; Stochastic Inverse Problems; Risk Modelling in Energy Markets.

Associate Professor Mianna Lotz

Associate Professor Mianna Lotz is Unit Convenor of MBiotech Core unit MOLS8002 – Bioethics, Genes and Biotechnology. Her research interests include the ethical and political philosophy of the family, childhood, parenting and reproduction, including recent biotechnological and surgical innovations. She is a member of the international Research Network on Democracy, Ethics and Public Policy.

Associate Professor Giuseppe Palmisano

Associate Professor Giuseppe Palmisano is Unit Convenor of MBiotech Foundation unit BMOL6201 Biochemistry and Cell Biology, and Core Unit MOLS8611 - Molecular and Medical Biotechnology. He is Academic Lead of the Australian Proteome Analysis Facility at Macquarie University. Palmisano’s research includes understanding how a pathogen interacts with vertebrate and invertebrate hosts using proteomics and other tools, and to identify biomarkers and therapeutic targets for infectious diseases.

Distinguished Professor Ian Paulsen

Distinguished Professor Ian Paulsen is Unit Convenor of MBiotech Foundation unit BMOL6432 – Molecular Biology and Genomics. He is a world leading researcher in membrane transport, microbial genomics, metagenomics, systems biology and bioinformatics, and the Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology (CoESB) at Macquarie. Distinguished Professor Paulsen is an ARC Laureate Fellow and an ISI Highly Cited Researcher. He has published more than 294 journal papers, which have received more than 85,000 citations.

Professor Alison Rodger

Professor Alison Rodger is Unit Convenor of MBiotech Core unit MOLS8211 – Protein Discovery and Analysis. Her research focuses on developing and applying spectroscopic techniques to understand the structure and function of biomacromolecules and their assemblies. She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, and a member of the ARC College of Experts. Professor Rodger creates hybrid techniques using absorbance, fluorescence and scattering methodologies.
