Scholarship within the Creative Documentary Research Centre addresses questions relevant to all disciplines across the creative arts, humanities, social sciences, medical, and natural sciences, and we have established partnerships in each of these fields.

We are distinguished by impactful and engaged research publications in traditional scholarly and highly public forums including broadcast television and radio, film festivals, museums and galleries, and acclaimed essays and books.

Our interdisciplinary research teams develop large-scale projects with world-changing impact that access knowledge that can only be reached through creative documentary practices. This important research investigates areas including: the justice system, gender equity, educational practices, Australian history and the impacts of colonialism, creative practice, performance, language and narrative, storytelling and folklore, media cultures, faith, climate change, natural history, and Indigenous reconciliation.

In support of our research mission, we seek out and secure grant funding and facilitate relationships with external partners. In recent years these have included:

  • Screen Australia
  • Australian Research Council
  • Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia
  • ABC Radio National
  • SBS TV
  • New South Wales Police
  • Documentary Australia
  • Guardian Australia
  • New South Wales and Victorian criminal courts
  • Homicide Victims’ Support Group
  • Community Restorative Centre
  • Salvation Army
  • Okeanos Foundation for the Sea (Germany)
  • Te Fare Natura eco-museum (French Polynesia)
  • The Naturmuseum Senckenberg (Germany)
  • The Cook Islands Government
  • The French Government through their Fonds Pacifique.
