BELLASIS, George Brydges (1760-1825) - Lieutenant
HEIC - Bombay Artillery
Present at Sedaseer and Seringapatam in 1799. He was injured by lightning at
Seringapatam on 6 May 1799 during the violent thunderstorm following
the burial service of Tipu Sultan.
Commissioned: Cadet 1791; Lieutenant Fireworker 14 April 1793;
Lieutenant 6 June 1797; aide-de-camp to General Brownrigg 1797; struck
off on 21 July 1801 after having been found guilty of having killed Mr.
Arthur Andrew Forbes Mitchell in a duel - and sentenced to 14 years
transportation to New South Wales; granted a Conditional Pardon by
Governor King on arrival in Sydney in January 1802, subject to the
restriction that he should remain in the territory of NSW during the
period of his sentence; on 14 October 1802 was appointed commandant of
the the governor's bodyguard of cavalry and granted a colonial
commission as a lieutenant of artillery of the Colonial Forces; received
a King's Pardon in June 1803 (on Governor King's initiative, later
confirmed from the Colonial Office) and sailed for Bombay on 10 August
1803; reinstated in his original place in the Bombay Artillery in July
1806; promoted Captain 10 December 1807; Major (Brevet) 14 June 1814;
Major 22 June 1814; Lieutenant-Colonel 1 September 1818; Lieutenant-Colonel
Commandant 1 May 1824.

CAMPBELL, Archibald (1769-1843) - Major
77th Regiment - Bombay Army
Served as brigade major to the European Brigade of the Bombay army at Sedaseer (Siddeswara) and was at the capture of Seringapatam in 1799.
Commissioned: Ensign in 1787 and posted to 77th Regiment; went to India in 1788 and served in the Bombay Presidency; present at first siege of Seringapatam in 1791; promoted Lieutenant (77th) and Adjutant of his regiment in 1791; participated in the campaign at Cochin 1795, and the expedition against the Dutch in Ceylon 1796; 4th Mysore War 1799; promoted Captain into the 67th Regiment, and exchanged into the 88th Foot (Connaught Rangers) to allow him to remain in India; ill-health forced him to return to England; promoted Major on 14 September 1804 into the 6th Battalion of Reserve, stationed in Guernsey; on its reduction in 1805 he was transferred to the 71st. Highland Light Infantry, and for the next three years commanded the 2nd battalion in Scotland and Ireland. In June 1808 Campbell joined the 1st Battalion of his regiment in Portugal and fought in the Peninsular War 1808-1814; he was knighted, promoted Colonel in the army on 4 June 1814, and appointed aide-de-camp to the Prince Regent. In January 1815 he was made a KCB. In 1816 he was made a Portuguese major-general, and commanded the division at Lisbon until 1820. He returned to Britain in 1821 and was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel of the 38th Regiment of Foot, which he joined at the Cape of Good Hope and took to India; soon afterwards he was appointed to command the British forces during 1st Burma War 1824-1826 and governed the provinces of Burma following the peace treaty of Yandaboo 1826-1829; served as Lieut. Governor of New Brunswick, Canada, 1831-1837; also awarded a Baronetcy in 1831 [1st Baronet of Ava]. Promoted to Lieutenant-General in 1838.

assault on 4 May - severely wounded in the right arm and forced to retire. Dunlop
served as a professional soldier in North America, India and the Peninsular
War. Also served as M.P. for Kirkcudbright in three successive parliaments from 1812-1826.

DUNSMORE, James - Captain

Fought at Sedaseer and Seringapatam 1799.
Assisted in the capture of an important redoubt near the ruined village of
Agrarum on the northern bank of the Cauvery river on 17 April 1799. The post
was within 1000 yards of the NW angle of the fort.
Dunsmore was also a member of the 'forlorn hope' of Lt. Colonel Dunlop's Left
Column with Serjeant Graham, who was killed in the breach at Seringapatam on 4
May 1799. Later received the Seringapatam medal.

GORDON, Robert

Arrived in Bombay as an ensign on 6 September 1782. In April 1783 he fought
against the army of Tipu and was captured at Anantapoor, along with 80 companions,
and subsequently marched in chains, to Chittledroog. After his release he served
at the siege of Cannanore (1791), the siege of Seringapatam (1792), and the subjugation
of Cotiote Country (1797). In 1799, as Adjutant-General he was present
at Sedaseer and the siege and capture of Seringapatam.

Served at Sedaseer and Seringapatam - possibly killed by lightning
during a severe thunderstorm on 5 May during the burial service for Tipu
Sultan. Also killed at this time was a 'Lieutenant Barclay' supposedly also serving in
the 77th at this time. No additional details currently known.

LAWRENCE, Alexander William (1764-1835) - Lieutenant
77th Regiment - Bombay Army
Served extensively with Lachlan Macquarie and the 77th Foot: took part in the campaign against
Seringapatam in 1791-1792, was present at the siege and capture of Cochin in
1795, the expedition to Ceylon in 1796, and in the Cotiote country in
1797 under Colonels Dow and Dunlop; later transferred to the 19th Foot
in Ceylon (c.1803-1808).
Present in the action at Seedaseer; wounded at Seringapatam 4 May 1799.
Commanded the Grenadier Company of the 77th and
volunteered for the 'forlorn hope' with three (3) other subalterns. These three officers
of the 'forlorn hope' were killed in the
assault on 4 May 1799, while Lawrence was severely wounded and left for
dead in the breach. He recovered and fought with the 77th in the assault on the rock fortress of Jamalabad in South Canara, in August 1799. Lawrence received a War Office pension of £100 per annum (from 25 December 1811 onwards) for his Seringapatam wounds.

1795-1801 on survey work in Malabar and Canara; appointed in 1797 to command the
newly formed Corps of Pioneers in Malabar; in 1799 measured the road from
Cannanore to Seringapatam, as well as commanding the guides and intelligence
corps; 1800-1801 served with Colonel Stevenson's force in Wynaad; visited Surat in late
1801 - returned to Bombay in October/November 1801.
Died: 10 January 1802, in Bombay.

trusted military officers in India.

recalled from retirement in 1822 to become Governor of St. Helena 1822-1830.
