Octr. 6.
Monday! — The Experiment Extra Indiaman arrived this day
from England – which she left on the 15th. of
May last. — By this opportunity I have had the happiness of
receiving a long Letter dated London the 21st. of April from my beloved
Elizabeth, containing good and pleasing accounts of herself and all my
other friends at Home. — I also received a Letter from my friend
Lieut. Genl. Balfour by
the Experiment dated 8th. May last. —
My dearest Elizabeth acknowledges the receipt of my Letters Pr. Milford from Bombay – under date the
20th. of Octr. last –
but none of a later date. —
Octr. 18.
Saturday! — The Prince of Wales Cruizer sailed this Evening for
Bussora with an Overland Packet for England.
I wrote by this opportunity, under this same date; to my dear and
beloved Miss Campbell to inform her of my intention to return to England
this Season; my good friend Governor Duncan having kindly released me
from my engagement to remain with him in India till January 1808! on my
explaining to him the nature of my matrimonial engagements with my
dearest Elizabeth, and which he allows to be paramount to all other
Engagements, as well as too interesting and important a nature for any
other to supersede or interfere with: —Consequently granting my
motive for leaving him, so much sooner than he wishes and than I
promised and agreed to do, is highly justifiable, correct, and honorable
in every point of view.
I have written to my beloved Elizabeth that I hope to have the felicity
of seeing and folding her to my Heart in all the month of July next in
England! —; but that I have not yet determined whether I shall go
Home by Sea – or Overland; tho' it is most probable I shall adopt the
latter as the quickest, safest, and most pleasant: — I have
promised to write her again Overland as soon as I have decided how and
when I am to go Home. —
