July
July 12. Friday! — At 8,O'Clock this
morning the Blenheim, 74, with
all the China, Madras, and Bengal Ships, parted Company and steered a
more Easterly course; the Admiral having detached the Greyhound Frigate
to convoy the Bombay Division of Ships, consisting of the City of
London, the Earl Camden, the Metcalfe and
Retreat Indiamen. — We parted
with the Admiral and his Fleet (by Observation at Noon) in Latd. 36°
23'; being nearly abreast of the Cape of Good-Hope, and about 150 miles
distant from the Continent of Africa ! —
July 22. Monday! — We entered the
Streights [sic] of Mozambique
(-formed by the Island of Madagascar, 900 miles long, on the one hand,
and the Continent of Africa on the other-) at 8,O'Clock this morning,
with a fine light wind. — The narrowest part of these Streights [sic]
is about 300 miles across. —
July 27. Saturday! — We have had a fine run through the Straits of
Mozambique without meeting with any accident; we are now clear of all
danger, having about Sunset quite cleared the Straits - and launched
fairly into the wide Indian Ocean !
