September

Septr. 4.
I received a letter from my Agent at Bombay with Five Coolies for the Field. — I discharged my Head Servt. Francis: wrote by him to my Agents at Bombay.

Septr. 6.
Tuesday. I had the pleasure, this day, of receiving a very agreeable letter from my Brother Charles, giving me good accounts of himself, and the rest of our Family's being all well and doing well. —

Finding that my Brother Charles is not yet permanently settled to any business in the country; and it appearing to me from the tenor of his last, and former letters, that he wished to try his fortune abroad; I have this day, in my own mind, resolved, providing, it meets with the concurrence, of his Uncle Lochbuy, to get him out to India, in the Military line, as soon as possible; it being the only line, I can possibly be of assistance and Service to him: – but, I must confess, notwithstanding it is my great and earnest wish, to serve my Brother, I feel a repugnancy in my own Breast, in being the cause of bringing him from home; where I know, our worthy affectionate good Mother, is so anxious to detain him, to be the comfort of her old age; at the same time, it is so very much against his interest, and his ever arriving at a comfortable and genteel livelihood, that, I conceive, I should do him an irreparable injury, were I by my advice and injunctions, to compel him to stay at home, to settle as a Farmer, in the present situation of that Country, when so little is to be made of it: – these, are my sentiments at present, with respect to my Brother; and these thoughts have induced me, to advise and invite him, to come out to the East Indies – where, God grant, he may prosper and succeed as I wish. —

Septr. 8.
I dined today, on a Turtle-Feast, by invitation, with Robert Taylor Esqr. Chief of Tellicherry. —

Septr. 17.
Capt. Montresor of our Regt., having been for some time past, much indisposed with the Liver; and being advised to take a Sea-voyage for the recovery of his health; he accordingly sailed this day for Madras. —

Septr. 25.
Sunday. His Majesty's Ship Vestal, commanded by Capt. Osborne, one of the Honble. Commodore Cornwallis's Squadron, anchored in the Roads of Tellicherry. —
