October

Octr. 1.
Saturday. I went today, along with my Friend Doctor Anderson to Cananore, on a visit to out Friends of the 73d. & 75th. Regiments. — We spent four very agreeable Days with them, and returned the 5th. Day to Durmapatam.

Octr. 5.
On my arrival from Cananore I found that the Servant sent me down by Mr. Brice from Bombay, was arrived; He is a Moorman and strongly recommended; — I am only bound to pay him Twenty Rupees per Month in lieu of Wages and Batta; but, if he pleases me and turns out well, I have promised to give him Twenty five Rupees per Month; I have made him this promise on account of the Good Character given of him by Mr. Bruce. —

Octr. 6.
This day my old and good Friend, William Shaw Esqr., Free Merchant of Bombay, departed this life, at Tellicherry, where, he had been for some time, much indisposed; he was a generous warm hearted Friend; but from his good nature and very benevolent disposition was often the dupe of artful designing People; by which means, his Affairs, latterly were much deranged; and I believe affected his mind so much, that it contributed very much to bring on the disorder that carried him off. —

Octr. 7.
I attended his funeral this day, and after the interment, I went along with Captain Donald Cameron to see his Books, Papers & Effects examined and taken an account of, which was accordingly done. —
