September
Septr. 3.
Friday. The Princess Royal East Indiaman, Capt. Horncastle, arrived this day from England; I had
laid a Bett [sic] of a chevouz and Ball for forty Ladies and Gentlemen
with Commodore Nesbitt, that the Princess Royal would arrive on or
before the 15th. of September; it gave me no small degree of
satisfaction that I won this Bett. [sic]
Septr. 20.
The Worcester East Indiaman Capt. Hall,
arrived this day from England, and brings accounts that we are likely
very soon to be in a War with Spain. —
Major General Abercromby (being lately Promoted to that Rank at home)
informed our Commanding Officer, Lt. Col. Balfour, this day, that our
Regiment is not to go at this time on Service, nor any of the Troops of
Bombay, for the Present, what ever they may do in some time hence: —
this News is a most cruel mortification and disappointment to us all –
especially when it is considered, that in full expectation of going
immediately on Service, we have put ourselves to an immense Expence in
Equiping and Compleating [sic] ourselves, and our Companies, with
Clothing, Necessaries, and Camp Equipage, fit for taking the Field: —
we have the additional mortification to reflect upon, that, we are the
only King's Regiment in India, either not on Actual Service, or Full
Batta, at this present moment; and, while a War is carrying on under the
fortunate auspices of a [words missing?] General Medows against Tippoo
Saib, we are made a Garrison Regt. in Bombay — Hard and Cruel Fate!
