2007 Community Engagement Awards

  • The Indigenous Science Program
    for addressing the wishes of Aboriginal elders in rural Northern NSW for them to motivate their Indigenous youth to complete their High School studies and consider further educational opportunities.
  • The Mia Mia Child and Family Study Centre
    for the provision of an extremely high quality program which is based on the intellectual pursuit for excellence in early childhood education and care, through collaborative and individual research and pedagogical documentation.
  • Professor Alanna Nobbs (Ancient History)
    for her work bringing Ancient History to the community at large.
  • Jonathan Gaston (Anxiety Research Unit)
    for his directorship of the Macquarie University Anxiety Research Unit, which is a research, teaching, and service clinic that provides assessment and treatment to about 500 clients per year.
  • Dr Coral Kemp (Special Education Centre)
    for her work initiating the community based Special Teaching and Research (STaR) project to enable infants and young children with disabilities or special learning needs to receive effective instruction.
  • Associate Professor Deborah Richards (Computing)
    for her work encouraging participation in the sciences, and providing vital links between students and the ICT industry.
  • Robin Walsh (Library)
    for his work with the Lachlan Macquarie Room and the Lachlan and Elizabeth Macquarie Archive and other collaborative projects.

  • Dr Peter Freeman (Research Office)
    for his work in the development of research management and the establishment of what is now known as the Research Unit.
  • Associate Professor Dan O'Brien (Education)
    for over 30 years of service in teaching education, language and literacy.
  • Associate Professor Catriona Mackenzie (Philosophy)
    for her excellence in teaching and contribution to the development of an ethics framework on campus.
  • David Westcott (Actuarial Studies)
    for 35 years of service to the University and contribution to the development of the world's first professionally accredited Actuarial Studies program.
  • Associate Professor Pamela Coutts (Education)
    for her contribution to the undergraduate education program, and her work with teaching and learning programs in particular.

2007 Eureka Prize

Professor Schwartz committed Macquarie to a further three years funding for the prize, and the Macquarie University Community Engagement Unit is consulting with local high schools as to refreshing the prize next year to include an increased focus on science and multimedia.

2006 Community Engagement Awards

  • Dr Michelle Arrow (Department of Modern History, Division of Humanities)

    This Award recognises Dr Arrow's work with secondary schools, students and teachers as well as her achievements communicating her research to non-academics via different media and as an historian with community and government organisations.

    Dr Arrow specialises in twentieth-century Australian history, history of popular culture in Australia and the United States, history and media, applied history, and Australian women playwrights, and is currently writing From Blue Hills to Big Brother: A History of Popular Culture in Australia since the Fifties.

  • Professor Chris Patel (Department of Accounting, Division of Economics and Financial Studies)

    Professor Patel has worked to promote high quality teaching with the National University of Samoa and the Samoan Society of Accountants, with three Malaysian universities - the Universiti Teknologi Mara, the Universiti Sains Malaysia, and the Universiti Utara Malaysia - with the University of Fiji and the University of Papua New Guinea.

    In addition, Chris is on the editorial boards of six refereed journals in his field which focus on accounting in emerging countries. Part of his own published research has been on the importance of economic, social, political and cultural factors in designing relevant and useful accounting systems.

  • Dr Susan Wright (Department of Accounting, Division of Economics and Financial Studies)

    Dr Wright has been teaching in the field of finance and accounting at Macquarie University since July 1985 and in recent years has focused on financial statement analysis at both the undergraduate level, where she lectures classes of up to 500 students, and at postgraduate level, where teaching can be one-to-one.

    In addition, at different times she has occupied a number of leadership positions within her Department, including Undergraduate Program Director, Deputy Head of Department and Acting Joint Head of Department. She has also been her Division's representative on the Academic Senate, a member of the Division's Equal Employment Opportunity and Workplace Culture Committee, and on the Division's Committees for Staffing and for Marketing. She is also currently part of a team developing ethics education across the accounting curriculum.

    Dr Wright's service to her profession includes holding the position as an elected Board Member of the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand, for which she is currently the Treasurer.
