Master of Research
The Master of Research is a bespoke two-year qualification that straddles the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level 8 and level 9. It is divided into two parts.
Year 1 – Coursework units, undergraduate level (AQF level 8)
The first year comprises eight coursework units designed to train HDR candidates to think and act as a researcher in our focal discipline areas. We offer a wide range of coursework units, including extension theoretical subject, and practical rotations through our research groups, where you get the first-hand experience in several research groups in the faculty. This helps you to make the right selection of the research group that you will be working with in the second year of the Master of Research program. If you decide to leave after the first year of the program, you will receive a Bachelor of Philosophy (BPhil).
ENTRY: You are eligible to enter the Master of Research year 1 program if you have completed an undergraduate degree with the appropriate prerequisites, and adequate GPA. Find out more information about the Master of Research year 1 program.
Year 2 – Research year (AQF level 9)
The second year is research-practice focused, where you complete a research project and deliver a thesis on your topic. You will be supported by a research supervisor and their team, and various higher-degree-research educators, both within the faculty and across campus. Successful completion of your Master of Research second year will allow you to apply to join the doctoral training program. Similarly, this research experience can set you up with fantastic skills to benefit your career.
ENTRY: If you have already completed an Honours degree, coursework Master’s degree, or equivalent research experience, you may be considered for direct entry to year 2 of the Master of Research program. Find out more information about the Master of Research year 2 program.
Doctoral Research Program – PhD
The PhD at Macquarie is a three-year program focused entirely on developing your skills to become an independent research professional. You will have the opportunity to work with internationally respected researchers, gain a deeper, stronger knowledge of their discipline and get a competitive edge. Applicants must identify a supervisor that is happy to host you as a PhD candidate prior to submitting an application.
