Together through time
Wherever you are on campus, you’re never far from a sculpture. But have you ever stopped to wonder how many sculptures Macquarie has, and when it all began?
The Macquarie University Sculpture Park opened on 27 September 1992, the culmination of 18 months of preparation by curator Errol Davis. The initial collection comprised of 25 sculptures that were selected to represent the depth and breadth of Australian artistic talent.
At the time, many of the sculptures were only on loan to the University, but 22 years on some have become permanent fixtures in a park that now includes 130 pieces by leading and emerging Australian and international sculptors, spread out over the entire Macquarie campus. One such piece is Larissa Smargarinsky’s bronze sculpture, Together Through Time, that was one of the original 25 pieces and still stands on the lawn outside C4A.
The park itself has certainly stood the test of time. Established in the 1990s, the growth of the project in recent years has really seen the park become a ‘sculpture park of the 21st century’ as Art Gallery curator, Leonard Janiszewski, explains in the video below.
