A vibrant culture of ‘for students, by students’ activity directly supports the retention and progression goals of the Framing of Futures Student Engagement for Success initiative. The contribution Student Groups make to this effort was celebrated at the annual Student Group Awards night on Friday 6 November 2015, with more than 200 students from various groups in attendance.
“Student Groups are important for developing a community of like-minded individuals who feel they belong at university,” says Kim Guerin, Director, Campus Life.
With more than 150 affiliated Student Groups at Macquarie University, the groups provide opportunities for leadership, and the development of personal and professional networks, with participation in these co-curricular studies benefiting graduate capabilities and supporting the wellbeing and retention of students. More than 30 per cent of student groups are discipline or faculty-based with these groups working to connect students with the staff of their faculties.
“The annual Student Group Awards provides the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements of the groups,” says Kim.
