Congratulations to Dr Edwin Lim, Senior Research Fellow from the Department of Biomedical Sciences, who has been chosen to represent Macquarie as one of 16 Australians in the Australia-China Scientist Exchange Program (YSEP) in November.
Awarded by the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, YSEP is a joint initiative co-funded by the Australian Department of Industry and Science and the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology. The program aims to develop future ‘science ambassadors’ to foster long term relationships between Australia and China.
Edwin will spend two weeks visiting various state-of-the-art research institutes and facilities including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University and the Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health, Chinese Academy of Science.
‘My aim is to collaborate with like-minded scientists to find new biomarkers and treatments for mental and neurological diseases, as well as learn about research and cultural practices in China which aligns perfectly with our current Strategic Research Framework,” says Edwin.
Edwin says research is about solving problems and to solve them quickly and innovatively. “To achieve this it takes teamwork. Just like the Chinese proverb ‘it is easy to break a chopstick, but they become unbreakable when we put all of them together’.”
