Wise up

Movies at Macquarie made a triumphant return earlier this year with the screening of The Dish. This week, join Professor David Rooney from the Department of Marketing and Management for the screening of Life of a King, and the chance to learn more about the art of being wise.

Life of a King follows the story of ex-con Eugene Brown (Cuba Gooding Jr.) who forms a chess club to help at-risk youths avoid the mistakes he made in life, and offer them an alternative to running with street gangs. Following the film, Professor Rooney will lead a panel discussion on wisdom, what it looks like and why it’s important.

“The evening will allow people to ‘see’ what wisdom looks like, and demonstrate how wisdom is something anyone, no matter what their background, can achieve,” he said.

Professor Rooney will be joined by Dr Steven Segal from Macquarie Graduate School of Management and Associate Professor Bernard McKenna from The University of Queensland’s Business School. Collectively, David, Steven and Bernard draw on Aristotelian, Existential, and Buddhist philosophies of practical or practice-based wisdom to define what wisdom is and to better understand how one can live and work wisely.
