1 October: Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe received an honorary doctorate recognising his outstanding contributions to sport and philanthropy.
“It is a great privilege to be awarded such an honour from one of Australia’s top educational institutions and one that I am very humbled by,” Ian said.
7 October: Our corporate neighbours gathered on campus for the first time to discuss future opportunities for collaboration with the University.
“We were delighted to have the opportunity to host and meet so many members of our corporate community, who are located on our campus,” said Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Corporate Engagement & Advancement) Professor David Wilkinson. “This is the first time we have been able to bring together these organisations and their senior executives, and it was evident that this one event has already led to the creation of some exciting opportunities for collaboration.”
13 October: Macquarie was one of the host venues for the annual Australian University Games.
“Hosting some of the sports at Macquarie allowed a fantastic opportunity for students, staff, friends and family members to get behind our competitors and see what the games are all about!” said Unisport Manager – Sport and Recreation Kate Glassop.
21 October: The Centre for Emotional Health, in partnership with the Australian Hearing Hub resident café Piccolo Me, raised $700 during last week’s Coffee for a Cause event. $1 from every coffee and sandwich sold was donated to research into anxiety and depression.
Centre for Emotional Health Director Professor Ron Rapee said it’s admirable that a small business is willing to utilise their area of expertise and resources to aid future research. “Their willingness to get involved proves you don’t need to be a corporate entity with substantial capital to make a difference.”
24 October: High school students and their parents from refugee backgrounds got a taste of campus life for the first time last week at the LEAP Macquarie Mentoring University Experience Day.
“The event served as both an empowering experience for our student mentors and an inspiring experience for the students who attended,” said LEAP Project Officer Vivienne Lam.
29 October: The Macquarie international and Marketing teams celebrated winning the Best International Prospectus award from one of our largest international partner organisations, IDP, for their collaborative effort on the 2015 International Student Program Guide.
