1 November: English language teacher Philip Radmall took out third place in the Newcastle Poetry Prize for his poem The Difference of Distance. For the third year in a row, Philip has achieved honours in what is now Australia’s oldest poetry prize.
18 November: Whilst studying Weddell seals in Antarctica, Professor Rob Harcourt managed to capture a photo of this furry fellow who was all too ready to pose for the camera.
18 November: Professor Gilles Guillemin [right] met French President Francois Hollande during his recent visit to Sydney at a dinner with Australian economic leaders and members of the French Researchers in Australia Network.
21 November: A six-week workplace pedometer challenge saw 24 staff from the Property team collectively walk more than 12 million steps. Their goal: Move more, sit less and focus on team-building.
24 November: The Federal Department of Education’s recent release of the consultation paper on Boosting the Commercial Returns from Research sought input from a wide range of stakeholders. 26 November: Macquarie Alumnus Hugh Passmore [left] was awarded the inaugural Harvard University John Monash Scholarship. Hugh will receive $180,000 over three years to continue his Masters of Public Policy studies at Harvard University.

28 November: VegeSafe team member Paul Harvey from the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences helped Beauty Point Primary School children see bugs and beasties under a microscope and analyse the soil from their vegetable garden at the Landcare in Curriculum launch.
28 Movember: After a razor-free month, a team of mo-bros from Macquarie University Hospital raised more than $5000 for the Movember Foundation.
Special mention: The Australian Institute for Health Innovation’s Professor Johanna Westbrook recently received the prestigious iAwards Australian ICT Professional of the Year award, which identified her as ‘an internationally-renowned and leading Australian Health Information Communication Technology (ICT) professional who has initiated and led large scale research programs that have contributed world-leading evidence about the role that ICT plays in enhancing patient safety and the quality of patient care’.
