The first cohort to complete our innovative Master of Research (MRes) program celebrated on campus last week alongside many of the staff involved in the program, including Dean of Higher Degree Research Professor Nick Mansfield and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Sakkie Pretorius.
The MRes combines coursework with a major research project, providing better preparation for PhD studies. This innovative approach replaces our Honours program and aligns the University with international best practice.
“This first cohort of MRes completions has far exceeded our expectations,” said Professor Mansfield. “Our target for completions in this second year of the program was 184, but over 200 theses have been submitted, with at least 30 more to come in the next few weeks.”
“I discovered my voice as a researcher,” said Phillipa Bellemore, an MRes completing candidate from the Faculty of Arts. “I have developed my distinct direction and feel I know where I am going and how to get there.”
The event also highlighted the research path ahead, with current and former PhD candidates speaking about where their PhD studies have taken their careers. With greater opportunities for PhD study now open, it is anticipated that many of these MRes students will continue the next step of their research careers with Macquarie.
“This group of candidates are perhaps the best prepared for PhD we’ve seen,” said Professor Mansfield. “We’re very proud of them.”
