PhD and MPhil students from across all four faculties get just 180 seconds to successfully pitch their research to a general audience and panel of experts at the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Final on 25 September.
“It’s very important to be able to communicate your science and make it accessible to everyone, and 3MT helped me in many ways with that,” said 2013 Macquarie finals winner Shu Hui Yau. “It forced me to condense the best parts of my research, and clearly see the bigger picture and relevance of my work. It’s definitely a good platform to publicise your work, and it was very encouraging for me to hear from people from all over afterwards, who were equally interested in, and excited about my findings.”
“The national final was also a great exercise in public speaking – Especially if you’re prone to serious pre-talk jitters, like I am!”
Now in its seventh year, 3MT has grown from a University of Queensland initiative to include universities across Australia and New Zealand, including Macquarie, where the faculty finals have recently been contested.
“We’re seeing a great wellspring of talent emerge from the faculty heats and campus-wide finals each year,” said 3MT judge and Dean of Higher Degree Research, Professor Nick Mansfield. “These are our next generation of leaders in discovery that will play a key role in achieving the strategic goals of the University’s Research and Learning & Teaching Frameworks in the years ahead.”
