The Australian Hearing Hub invited the community to campus to celebrate Hearing Awareness Week, offering free hearing and screening tests to raise awareness of hearing health.
“This is an opportunity for the community to visit the Australian Hearing Hub and learn about hearing health and the hearing-related services offered within the hub,” said Professor Janet Greeley, Executive Dean of Faculty of Human Sciences.
Opening the day, The Hon. Jillian Skinner MP said it is important to host community events to raise awareness of hearing health.
“The Australian Hearing Hub is a great example of collaboration. It brings together experts in hearing to work together to positively impact people’s lives,” she said.
AHH experts shared information on research areas in language development, tips for managing anxiety in children, helping children with dyslexia, hearing technology, and personal stories about growing up with hearing loss.
The public also had the chance to tour the anechoic chamber and see Macquarie photonics laser micromachining demonstrations.
Professor Harvey Dillon, Director of National Acoustic Laboratories said, “the Australian Hearing Hub in particular, and Macquarie in general, has all the disciplines and expertise necessary to investigate how to make sure that hearing loss never gets in the way of children achieving normal language ability and in life opportunities.”
