Riding to campus is part of the daily routine for many of us, but for others it’s a daunting thought. English Language teacher Philip White is using pedal power, rain, hail or shine, and is encouraging us all to dust off our bicycles for Ride2Uni day on 15 October.
“Riding to work is a good way to see the things you wouldn’t otherwise,” said Philip. “It’s faster than walking, but slow enough to appreciate where you’re travelling through.”
Having once made the more than 3000km ride between Sydney and Perth for charity, Philip views cycling as a pleasure and a practical pursuit when commuting to work.
“For me it’s great fun, exercise, it’s cheap and it’s social,” said Philip. “It’s also low impact on your knees and on the environment.”
Whilst Philip has been riding since he was 10, he says riding to work isn’t just for the die-hards.
“Just give it a go,” said Philip. “If you’re considering riding a bike to work and are a bit wary, try testing your route on a weekend or during Ride2Uni Day and see how you go.”
