Macquarie will join peak sporting and corporate organisations and say NO to racism on Wednesday 6 August by signing the Racism. It Stops with Me supporter agreement, as part of a national campaign by the federal government.
“Macquarie has a long held tradition of actively standing up for the rights of staff, students and the wider community,” said Director of Equity and Diversity, Kate Wilson. “This event signifies our ongoing commitment to ensuring the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion continue to be celebrated at the University.”
The event features Race Discrimination Commissioner Dr Tim Soutphommasane, who is a supporter of the Australian Human Rights Commission campaign Racism. It Stops With Me.
A first-generation Australian of Chinese and Lao extraction, Dr Soutphommasane’s thinking on multiculturalism and national identity has been influential in reshaping debates in both Australia and Britain and is also the author of Don’t Go Back To Where You Came From.
Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton will join Dr Soutphommasane at the event which will also see the introduction of Student Campaign Ambassadors and members of the Multicultural Advisory, feature the multimedia project Our People Many Journeys, and Macquarie Human Rights Poetry Slam student competitors.
