Jumping into the briny deep is just another day at the office for Biological Sciences Scientific Officer Sarah Collison, who takes BIOL 379 (Reef Evolution and Dynamics) classes on field trips to the Great Barrier Reef.
Additional specialised training for this kind of activity opens up new opportunities, so Sarah successfully applied for a Professional Staff Development Grant.
“The grant allowed me to enhance my role amongst a great team, providing teaching support and laboratory management, and combine it with my passion for diving,” said Sarah, who used part of her $1000 grant to obtain qualifications as a PADI Rescue Diver.
“In-water activities encompass extensive work, health and safety requirements,” said Sarah. “I already hold an Advanced Open Water certificate, but to be of greater assistance in the water should a situation arise, you need to have completed a PADI Rescue Diver course too.”
Since completing the course, Sarah says she has a greater understanding of the negative situations that can arise and how to act when dealing with snorkelers and scuba divers.
“The marine environment is unpredictable and at times dangerous, so knowing how to provide assistance when it’s needed not only strengthens my abilities as a member of marine fieldwork support staff here at Macquarie, but also as a recreational diver,” said Sarah, who can soon apply to be on the University Dive Register as a result of additional accreditations, allowing her to take part in further marine and diving fieldwork.
