Dr Mary Davies will commence as the University’s Chief Information Officer on Monday 25 August. I am delighted to announce this important appointment and to welcome Mary to our university.
Dr Davies comes to Macquarie University from the University of Western Australia where she held the appointment of University Librarian and Director of Information Management, responsible for the strategic leadership and management of the University’s IT Services (including AV Services) and Libraries. In this role, achievements included significant infrastructure and system developments across the university (new UWA-wide network, creation of a local private cloud incorporating a Research Data Store, new e-learning system and upgraded lecture capture system, increased collaborative learning spaces and 24/7 facilities for students) to support the research, teaching, learning and administrative functions of the University.
Prior to that, Mary was at King’s College London for six years culminating in the position of Deputy CIO and Director of Research and Learning Support. She successfully led the development of King’s Information and Knowledge Strategy, including the roll-out of the first centrally supported e-learning system at King’s and the development of a research information management system, for which she received a King’s Professional Services Award for outstanding service. Significant government, private enterprise and tertiary education appointments across the U.K preceded that role at King’s College, including eight years with Cancer Research UK.
Mary holds Masters and PhD qualifications in Information Technology and Information Science, is active in a wide variety of professional capacities and has a strong record in published papers and presentations. Most recently, Mary received a Meritorious Service Award for Contribution to the Advancement of IT in the Higher Education Sector from the Council of Australian University Directors of IT.
Mary will replace Acting CIO Jeff Stewart, whose assistance over the past six months has been greatly appreciated.
