A priority pathway to Macquarie University
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Entry Pathway (ATSIEP) provides advice and opportunities for Indigenous students who want to study undergraduate level courses at Macquarie.
This entry pathway applies to all Macquarie University undergraduate degrees and is administered by Walanga Muru.
Applications to study in Semester 2 2024 and Semester 1 2025 are currently open.
Eligibility
To be eligible, you must be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person under the Commonwealth definition.
You can apply through this pathway if you:
- have not completed your HSC or equivalent
- received an ATAR score lower than required for your chosen degree
- would like peace of mind
- are a mature aged student.
Selection process
The selection process consists of two stages:
- a written application and,
- a face-to-face interview.
Requirements for the written application are listed below:
1. Evidence of Aboriginality
Provide your evidence of Aboriginality. Submissions may include one of the following.
- Confirmation of Aboriginality (confirmation/common seal). A confirmation can be either:
- the applicant's own personal confirmation
- the applicant's parent's/direct family member's confirmation accompanied by the applicant's birth certificate and corresponding birth certificates to establish descent.
- Letter of support from an appropriate community representative (eg AECG member, Aboriginal organisation, land council, etc). If you require more information, email wmpathways@mq.edu.au.
2. Educational history
Examples of relevant educational history are:
- HSC results
- copies of TAFE transcripts
- your latest school report, if you're a school leaver
- diploma or past university transcripts, if you have previous tertiary study or are transferring.
Note: your documentation must include marks for the subjects or units you've studied. A letter of completion that contains no results will not be accepted.
3. Work experience
Outline the types of work you've undertaken. Work experience can include paid employment, unpaid work experience or volunteer work. Include the dates of your work experiences and a brief overview of the types of activities involved.
4. Personal statement
In 500 words, write a personal statement outlining your aspirations for attending university. Your statement should include the reasons why you've chosen the degree listed on your application, for example:
- what interests you about your chosen area of study
- what you would like to accomplish within this area
- what do you see yourself doing after you graduate.
Note: an applicant will only be offered an interview when all the above documentation has been submitted in full.
All applicants are required to attend a face-to-face interview to determine their readiness to undertake university studies.
We'll email you further information about the interview to the email address you provided on the application form.
You'll find out whether you've been successful for this entry pathway within two weeks of attending your interview.
Online interviews
Online interviews are taking place while our campus is disrupted by COVID-19. Interviews will return to face-to-face as soon as possible.
