This distance education course provides students with a thorough grounding in the law and practice of conveyancing through a rigorous examination of relevant legal and practical skills.

Macquarie Law School has been at the forefront of conveyancing education since we first offered our Conveyancing – Law and Practice course in 1994.

Licensed conveyancers are able to undertake a wide range of legal work relating to property and business. They may act as legal advisors in the sale, purchase, mortgage or lease of residential and commercial property and small business.

Course overview

This program is ideal for students already in full-time employment, with family or other commitments which prevent regular attendance at lectures. You should be prepared to spend at least six to ten hours per week studying for each unit.

The course is made up of:

  • eight units total (taken full time as two units per session with two sessions per year or part time equivalent)
  • a final exam for each unit at the end of each session
  • a graduation ceremony in the year after completion.

Note: The conveyancing program is not a tertiary award. It is a professional development program that covers the educational requirements that goes towards obtaining the NSW conveyancing licence. Work experience is also required to obtain the NSW conveyancing licence – students will need seek work placements independently. Contact the NSW Office of Fair Trading for more information regarding work experience and obtaining a conveyancing licence.

Each application is considered on its merits, but we do expect applicants to have proficiency in written English and a level of education equivalent to the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC).

Incomplete applications will not be considered. You must provide:

  • a copy of your results (eg HSC, School Certificate or TAFE course results) with your application form. A copy of the certificate awarded is not enough.
  • references from relevant employers, if you wish to have industry experience taken into account.

Macquarie University reserves the right to:

  • alter any of the arrangements for classes either before or during the course
  • cancel or terminate a course
  • refuse any enrolments as permitted by law.

Note: The program is not open to international students as it is focused on obtaining a New South Wales conveyancer licence only. Students are required to be eligible to study in Australia.

One of the following three will be taken into account when assessing your application.

Secondary year/award

Minimum entry requirements to the program is HSC or equivalent. You are required to provide documentary evidence of your HSC or equivalency. For example, if you have completed the NSW Higher School Certificate, you must include a copy of your results, not just a copy of the certificate awarded. If you do not have a copy of your results for this level/year of education, you should contact the relevant issuing authority in your state (eg the NSW Board of Studies).

Note: If your certificate is in another language an English translation is required.

Tertiary year/award

If you have attained a higher educational qualification, such as a University degree, please list any post-secondary educational qualifications you have attained, such as University degrees or diplomas, TAFE diplomas or certificates and the year they were awarded. You must provide documentary evidence of these results (eg University academic transcript or TAFE results).

Note: If your certificate is in another language an English translation is required.

Conveyancing work history

Please indicate your current employment and/or previous employment you consider relevant to the course. If you wish to have industry experience taken into account when assessing your application, you must include references from relevant employers. Note: This is particularly important for applicants who have not attained a level of education equivalent to the NSW Higher School Certificate.

You must provide details of your current employment and/or previous employment you consider relevant to the course. Attach any relevant documents to the application (eg work references).

The program does not fall under the AQF framework and hence is not applicable for RPL/Credit.

RPL for entry into the program

Documented work experience is taken into consideration as an entry requirement for the course.

If any previous studies successfully undertaken are equivalent to the units in the Macquarie program, a maximum of two units may be exempt. No exemption will be given for the first unit: Introduction to Law.

Exemptions from a unit in the course may be granted when an applicant can demonstrate that they have successfully completed studies of very similar material as part of another recognised course.

The majority of the content of a Macquarie University Conveyancing – Law and Practice unit must have been completed in previous studies in order to qualify for an exemption.

Each of the eight units which make up the Conveyancing course are broad in scope, so it is sometimes the case that an applicant has previously studied a related topic, but their studies have not covered a sufficient amount of the relevant unit content.

Please note:

  • exemptions are not given for work experience.
  • exemptions from more than two units are only granted in the most exceptional circumstances.

If you believe that you may qualify for an exemption, download the exemption request form. Your application for exemption must be submitted with your enrolment application, and must be received by the closing date for new applications.

Scholarships are only open to continuing students.

There are two categories of scholarships available to Conveyancing – Law and Practice students.

Merit scholarship

This scholarship:

  • is a fee refund of up to two units in the upcoming session
  • is awarded automatically; applications are not required.

The Merit scholarship will be automatically awarded to the student with the highest average mark after the previous session. To be eligible the student must have successfully completed a minimum of four units and be enrolled into the upcoming session.

Equity scholarships

There are two equity scholarships available. Equity scholarships for 2025 session 1 are now open

Equity scholarship

This scholarship:

  • is funded by Macquarie Law School
  • is a fee refund of up to two units in the upcoming session
  • requires student applications.

The equity scholarship is available to support conveyancing students. To be eligible, students must have successfully completed at least two units and be enrolled into the upcoming session.

The Debra Ronan Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship:

  • is funded by the Australian Institute of Conveyancers NSW Division (AICNSW) and the Ronan family
  • awards to two winners each year: one in session one, the other in session two
  • is a fee waiver of one unit in the current session
  • requires student applications.

Debra Ronan was an Associate Lecturer in Law at Macquarie University from 1993 until 2020 when she sadly passed away from ovarian cancer. She taught in the Conveyancing Law and Practice Course since its inception in 1994 and she was also the Conveyancing Course Director for a decade (2010–20). She has taught many conveyancing students and has had an indelible impact on the Conveyancing Course, where she played a transformative role in establishing and developing the Conveyancing Course into the successful program that it is renowned for today.

The Debra Ronan Memorial Scholarship is proposed to honour Debra’s memory.

Tuition fees are currently $1200 per unit paid up-front. The program is not covered by the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) as the program is not an award.

Fees must be:

  • paid on time and in full
  • included with your application
  • paid by Mastercard or Visa only.

Conveyancing – Law and Practice is not a Commonwealth Supported course. Tuition fees cannot be paid through FEE-HELP.

To cancel your application or withdraw from a unit, contact the Conveyancing Support Officer at conveyancing@mq.edu.au before the cancellation date.

The cancellation deadline each semester is 5pm on the Friday of the first week.

The University:

  • will only consider a refund of 80 per cent of your tuition fees if requested before this date
  • will not refund your tuition fees if you cancel your application after the cancellation date
  • cannot accept responsibility for any changes in personal circumstances.

NSW Fair Trading conveyancer licence

In NSW, you need a conveyancer licence issued by NSW Fair Trading to do certain legal work in relation to property transactions.

The Conveyancing – Law and Practice program conducted by Macquarie University is an approved educational qualification as provided for in Schedule 1 of the Conveyancers Licensing (Qualifications) Order 2006.
