About the scholarship

Associate Professor Melanie Beresford studied Politics and History at Adelaide University before switching to Economics at the University of Cambridge. Her PhD entitled Unification and Economic Development in Vietnam was published by Macmillan and, together with Vietnam: Politics, Economics and Society (Pinter, 1988), established her as one of the leading scholars in the world on the political economy of Vietnam. Melanie worked in the Division of EFS and then the Faculty of Business and Economics at Macquarie University for over 20 years and was admired by everyone for her courteous manner, her friendly and giving nature and her intellect. In 2013, Melanie sadly passed away, after suffering a pulmonary embolism. Melanie is sorely missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to know her, by her students, those she supervised and those who worked with her in the Department of Economics and more latterly across the University in her role as Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Business and Economics. This scholarship is being established in the memory of Dr Melanie Beresford and her wonderful work in the area of political economics in South East Asia.
