VALE DIANA SALISBURY

Diana Salisbury, who had recently taken Voluntary Early Retirement from her position in the Personnel Office, died in late February after an illness of some months. Some years earlier Di was personal assistant to the University's first Equal Employment Opportunity Officer. Di had many friends amongst staff members at Macquarie, both general and academic, and they will be saddened to know that she is no longer with us. Her family arranged a private funeral, and a few days later a wake for some of those who knew and loved her. If you would like further information, call Cynthia Hamilton, (x7448).

Help Select Representative

Four volunteers responded to the request for expressions of interest from staff willing to represent staff and students from non-English speaking background on the Equal Opportunity Committee. The Equal Opportunity Committee at its last meeting requested that all staff who might require such representation be invited to meet the volunteers so that a group decision can be made as to the most suitable person. If this is relevant for you, please let me know if you would be interested in participating in the selection of your representative and I will arrange a meeting at a convenient time. Please contact me by telephone (x7471) or e-mail sarah.levin@mq.edu.au

OSGOs Ready to Assist

The beginning of a new academic year is a busy and sometimes stressful period for most staff. In 1998, staff will be devoting considerable effort to providing high quality and effective services, often with reduced resources. It is not difficult to imagine that these pressures may lead to misunderstanding and the perception of being unfairly treated, harassed or otherwise on the wrong end of unfair or unlawful discrimination

If you have such a workplace problem or grievance, an On Staff Grievance Officer (OSGO) is a readily accessible first point of contact for you to discuss your concerns. In a confidential, informal and supportive environment, you will be assisted to consider options and develop a range of appropriate actions which may resolve the matter. The OSGO aims to facilitate the resolution of the issues raised, and wherever appropriate, to restore a harmonious working environment.

After many years of providing helpful support to staff, Mr Roger Nurse resigned as an OSGO at the end of 1997. In 1998, two new On Staff Grievance Officers are available. The complete group is now as follows:

Mr Andrew Busuttil (OCS) x9418
Professor Ed Davis (MGSM) x8999
Ms Sheri Evans (Centre for Chiropractic) x9383
Ms Liz Keane (Biology) x8140
Dr Alan Tidwell (MGSM) x9963
Bronte Mitchell (Library) x7200

LOST PALATE

What is it? It looks like a transparent mouth denture or plate, with little studs connected to many wires. Also with a plaster cast of a mouth and teeth. This artificial palate is used to measure the tongue and palate contact area during speech, and is custom made for an individual mouth. It was lost in the University Mail System after coming all the way from the UK and was addressed to Dr Sallyanne Palethorpe.

If you have this item sitting on your desk or have seen it somewhere, please ring Ray (x8765), or send it to Ray Robinson, School of English, Building C5A room 539. It is required for a current Speech Research study. We wish to avoid ordering another one at $500 and waiting another two months for it to come from the UK! Any help appreciated.

STUDENT RESEARCHER SEEKS SUBJECTS

A BPsych(Hons) student is currently researching the efficacy of Reiki healing in the treatment of migraine. Reiki is an ancient form of healing, in which Reiki practitioners use the gentle practice of "laying-on of hands" to channel energy into the body of the recipient, promoting harmony and balance. A Reiki treatment is painless, relaxing and non-invasive. In fact, there are no known negative or adverse effects of Reiki that the student is aware of. Reiki does not involve any type of manipulation or removal of clothing, just the gentle "laying-on of hands".

Participation in this research involves visiting a room on campus, once a week for four weeks, to receive a free Reiki treatment of between thirty minutes and an hour in duration. You will also be asked to complete a migraine diary for three months. It is hoped that these treatments will aid in minimising or alleviating migraine symptoms, although a cure cannot be promised.

If you suffer from at least two migraines a month, and are interested in participation, please contact Lisa Lunnon for further details (tel: 9452 4078; e-mail: blunnon@ozemail.com.au.

LETTERS

Dear Editor,

The resumption of classes has seen the annual resumption of illegal parking on campus. Every day in Week 1, in the undercover parking areas in the middle of campus, at least one person acted as though the clear "No Parking Any Time" signs didn't apply to him/her. And I didn't see a single offending vehicle with an infringement notice!

The University's traffic and parking rules are both clear and fair. Yet a small minority of drivers ignore them every day, and the security staff seem to do nothing about the resulting hazards and inconvenience. Regular enforcement (at least twice a day) is needed NOW, and should this prove ineffective, some revenue collecting would not be unreasonable.

Michael Edgeloe (MPCE)

(And have you seen the pile-up around 6.00pm as cars leaving the University fill two lanes for turning right into Herring Road at the gates ? - Editor)
