The Macquarie University Singers are recruiting new voices for their 1997 series of concerts and performances. The Singers, formed by the late John Gordon in 1967, are one of the oldest of the clubs and societies on campus.
Repertoire over the years has been broad and varied and has included major works by composers from Bach and Handel to Ramirez and Gershwin. The Singers acted and sang in the popular ABC-TV series Brides of Christ, which received acclaim in 1991.
Highlights of the last 12 months included Requiems of both Mozart and Faure, the former with SBS Youth Orchestra and the latter with Macquarie University Orchestra. The singers also participated in the Sydney Opera House's Last Night of the Proms, and acted as backing vocalists at the ENZSO Concert at the Entertainment Centre with members of Split Enz and the South Australian Symphony Orchestra.
Among the programs planned for 1997 are a Gala Concert to celebrate the Singers' 30th birthday and a performance of Vaughan Williams' A Sea Symphony, with Willoughby Choir and Orchestra.
All voice parts are invited to join the Singers - sopranos, altos, and especially tenors and basses. No formal auditions are required. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings from 7.00 to 9.30pm in building C5C room 209, commencing 10 March. For more details ring MUS president Corinna Horrigan 9413 7108. (Please leave a message if the phone is unattended.)
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INFORMATION OFFICE
The former Bachelor of Technology (BTech) Information Office was renamed the Science and Technology Information Office at the meeting of the Science and Technology Advisory Committee (STAC) last month.
STAC established the BTech Office, as it became widely known, in 1989, with a staff of one (Kathy Withford) and a half, Angela Seeto. Its purpose was to promote the new technology degrees and to set up an undergraduate scholarship program. Kathy left shortly for the bright lights of corporate finance and Angela continued in the Office as the BTech Information Administrative Officer and Secretary to the STAC.
With the recent introduction of two new degrees, the Bachelor of Medical Science and the Bachelor of Environmental Science, within the science cluster, the role of the BTech Office has been expanded and the name changed to include these. The Office is located on the ground floor of Building E7A in Room 119, x8897.

CHANGE OF NAME FOR CREDIT UNION
At the 1996 Annual General Meeting of the Universities Credit Union Ltd, the Rules of the Credit Union were amended to enable it to extend its bond and offer its services to residents and persons employed in the Randwick, Ryde and South Sydney local government areas and adjoining suburbs. The name was changed toUnicom Credit Union Ltd from 1 March 1997.
For nearly 35 years, the Credit Union had operated solely within the educational environment and offered its services to members of the various campus communities and their families, alumni and persons having some affinity with a particular post-secondary educational institution. The rate of growth had slowed due to the declining number of permanently employed people on campus, and the Directors of the Credit Union have acted to strengthen the business base and help insure longer term independence and financial viability.
Members of the Credit Union have access to the 24-hour Member Enquiry Centre on 9319 5855.
PROCEDURAL CHANGES
The following two recent amendments to OH&S legislation apply to the University:
Inspector's access to information - Inspectors, who have the power under the OH&S Act, may demand that persons provide information, documentation and evidence about contravention of the OH&S Act and associated legislation without visiting their place of work.
Non-disturbance of place of work after accident - The period
during which a worksite must not be disturbed after a fatal accident
or a dangerous occurrence is set as 36 hours from the time WorkCover
is notified. A definition of dangerous occurrence may be found
in the Personnel Management Handbook Section 27.05.

BLOOD BANK HERE IN MARCH
The Red Cross Blood Bank mobile unit will visit Macquarie again soon. It takes all types to give blood and you can contribute when the mobile unit visits Macquarie over two days to keep up with the demand for blood. The details of the next visit are:
Monday 24 March 10.00am to 3.45pm
Tuesday 25 March 9.30am to 3.30pm
The Red Cross Blood Bank greatly appreciates your help in giving blood. Your valued support will help in the treatment of many people, including supplying vaccines to immunise children and adults vulnerable to disease as well as providing life saving blood to trauma victims. Children with acute leukaemia rely on the gift of blood and this is only available because of the generosity of blood donors.
Healthy adult men and women up to 70 years can give blood. To protect the blood supply, all donors must sign a safety declaration before every donation. Giving blood is absolutely safe - all equipment is sterile, used once only and then discarded.
For further information about the Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service, please telephone Linda Fagan on 9229 4444.
OFFICE ERGONOMICS TRAINING
Office ergonomics training introduces the principle and practice of office ergonomics, including common causes of injuries, the prevention of injuries and basic office safety, including manual handling, workstation design, and the importance of breaks and alternative work. 20 May 1997 | 9.30am - 12.00pm |
28 May 1997 | 9.30am - 12.00pm |
Consultation on office and computer ergonomics is available on an as-needed basis. Employees requesting consultation should first discuss related issues with their supervisor and inform their supervisor about their request for consultation. Schools/Offices requesting multiple consultations are encouraged to first hold a department-wide class on office and computer ergonomics.
For further information on consultation and courses, please contact Ugo Cernot, OH&S Officer, on x9723.

KEYBOARD PAUSE BREAKS
I have reported recently that RSI is on the increase in the University. One way to prevent this type of injury is to take frequent short breaks and to do slow stretches during these breaks. University policy compels all keyboard users to take reasonable breaks from keyboard work.
There are computer programs on the market which will help computer users do pause stretches. Some programs may be downloaded directly from internet sites:
http://www.possibility.com/PowerPause/ (PC Windows only)
http://saturn.vision.net.au/~macsol/ergo.htm (PC Windows and Mac)
Others may be purchased from suppliers such as Office Gym (Hou Leong P/L) Phone 06 242 8541 or 014 488 205, which sells software for PC Windows only. The cost is $35 per single licence. Price may be negotiated for a multi-user license.
A Sydney firm is Stretch Break Program, (Learning in Focus Enterprises
Pty Ltd). Phone 9555 2206, Fax 9555 9948 - for PC Windows only.
The price may be negotiated for a multi-user license.

CUTSD National Teaching Development Grants
The National Teaching Development Grants for 1997/1998 have been announced by the Committee for University Teaching and Staff Development (CUTSD). This is a new Scheme which is somewhat different to the previous CAUT Scheme. There are now two categories of grants that individuals and Schools can apply for:
National Teaching Development Grants - Individual
National Teaching Development Grants - Organisational
Another major difference is that the requirements for applications that propose a significant software development are more stringent than in previous years.
Full details, guidelines and application forms are available on the CUTSD Website at : http://uniserve.edu.au/CUTSD/
As in previous years, Macquarie is required to rank its endorsed applications before forwarding them to the Committee. The University closing date for applications is Monday, 14 April. This will allow the University Project Ranking Committee time to assess the applications, arrange any modifications and determine the final ranking.
CHEPD will be running two workshop sessions to assist you in your applications:

Public Sector Transformation Workshop
Macquarie Graduate School of Management
11 to 13 April 1997
This workshop will focus on changes to public administration, governance and public sector accounting and accountability. It is expected that academic papers covering these changes in various countries will be presented.
The public sector is in a period of transition in many countries, and many governments are proposing fundamental changes to the governance, information systems and regimes of accountability, accounting and auditing. Different patterns of change are being pursued in different countries. Changes in Australasia are aimed at increased efficiency and competition in the provision of public sector goods and services. Whilst some changes in Asia are aimed at improving democracy and efficiency, others are about streamlining government services. In OECD countries there appear to be mixed reasons for pursuing public sector administrative reforms. In several countries there have been significant changes to the traditional public administrative, accounting, auditing and accountability technologies.
Cost for the three days is $250 by 28 March ($300 thereafter). For more information please contact Kelly Callaghan x9038 or e-mail: public-sector@mq.edu.au.
