MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY SINGERS' 40TH ANNIVERSARY

The Macquarie University Singers will celebrate their 40th anniversary with a concert of music and song from the last 40 years. The concert provides an entertaining link, through narrative, song and visual presentation, between the Aboriginal history of the University site and the Scottish heritage of its namesake, Governor Lachlan Macquarie.  It then takes the audience on a musical journey through the ‘60s, from Stage & Screen - choral arrangements of the much-loved shows Oliver and West Side Story - to new settings of immortal songs from the era, including Michelle and Bridge over Troubled Water.

The Singers will celebrate their rich history with popular works from their repertoire, including Handel’s famous Zadok the Priest, and fun pieces that connect the choir with University life – not forgetting a repeat rendition of Peter Corkhill’s show-stopping Australians All, which received its world premiere, live to air on Richard Glover’s 702 Drive on ABC Radio in 2006.

The Singers are conducted by Margot McLaughlin, who this year celebrates 20 years as the Director of Macquarie University Singers.  Narration is provided by Frank Clarke, Emeritus Professor of History at the University, who will be the audience’s guide through this musical entertainment.  The choir will be joined by some of Sydney’s top musicians, including Matthew Doyle, who performed didgeridoo on the sails of the Opera House during the millennium Dawn Ceremony, Bill Campbell, one of Australia’s leading bagpipers and organist Brett McKern.

Macquarie University Singers is a choir of over 100 voices drawn from students, staff and members of the community, and performs regularly at concerts and events on campus, as well as making regular appearances at the Sydney Opera House and in major events around Sydney.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Researching (e)Learning and Teaching at Macquarie

Researching (e)Learning and Teaching at Macquarie is a special interest research group that aims to support the development of a critically reflective, evidence-based approach to the development of sustainable, high quality learning environments which make effective use of eLearning technologies to cater for the needs of our diverse body of students. The upcoming seminar will feature two presentations:

Leading and Managing the Development of (e)Learning: Insights from the fieldProfessor Stephen Marshall, IHERD

The notions of “leading” and “managing” learning and teaching are conceptually ambiguous.  Neither in everyday parlance, nor in the research literature, do we find common or consistent usage of these terms.  Thus, an answer to the question: “What does it mean to 'lead' and/or 'manage' the development of e.learning?” is not immediately obvious.  In this presentation, the findings of a recent study designed to explore key stakeholders’ understandings of the notions of “leadership” and “management” of learning and teaching will be reported upon, and the implications of these understandings explored.

Students’ Ideas about FeedbackMs Anna Rowe and Dr Leigh Wood, Division of Economic and Financial Studies

Feedback on formative assessment constitutes a central aspect of learning. Effective and high quality feedback is a key element of quality teaching. Meta-analyses studies have found feedback to be a powerful influencer of student achievement. Building on previous research, our study aims to further explore student perceptions of feedback from formative assessment.  In Semester 1, we carried out focus groups with students and from that developed a survey. At this seminar we will present preliminary findings from the 1000 students who have completed the survey.

All staff interested in developing their scholarship in learning, teaching and eLearning are warmly invited to participate.

Lunch will be provided.

Date: Thursday 18 October

Time: 1.00pm–3.00pm

Venue: E6A 116

Presentations: Professor Stephen Marshall; Ms Anna Rowe and Dr Leigh Wood

Overcoming Procrastination in Postgraduate Study

Research suggests that over 60% of University students would like to reduce their level of academic procrastination, and approximately 25% of students experience chronic problems in this area. Postgraduate study can be a potentially high-risk time for students in terms of procrastination problems. This may be partly due to the often large workloads and associated high stress, as well as the challenge of undertaking and completing a large body of work such as a thesis. Academic procrastination has potentially significant costs to the postgraduate student. These costs can be both academic (poor performance, lower marks and course withdrawal) and health-related (stress problems, increased risk of anxiety or depression, poor physical health, poorer quality of life).

Academic procrastination is a problem that can be addressed and significant improvement achieved in a relatively short period of time. This half-day workshop will not only present a model of procrastination that students can use to assess their own areas of difficulty, but specific topics and associated strategies will be discussed including:

  • Identifying factors leading to procrastination
  • Effective time management
  • Effective task management
  • The role of self esteem and study beliefs
  • Perfectionism
  • Managing background stress
  • Identifying potential obstacles to change

This workshop has been developed by the Macquarie University Counselling Service.

This half-day workshop will be presented by Dr. Julie Erskine, Principal Counsellor, Macquarie University Counselling Service and Jonathan Gaston, Clinic Director, Macquarie University Centre for Emotional Health

Date: Wednesday 31 October

Time: 10.30am–1.30pm

Venue: E6A 116

New Managers/Module 2:  The Essence of Being in Charge

Becoming a manager is a big step.  For many, it is the first time that they are exposed to the responsibilities and challenges of achieving outcomes through others.  Without adequate support to help them grow into their new roles, most first time managers would approach their duties by doing what they do best—that is, doing the work themselves!

This workshop, the second in the a series of three workshops, has been designed to enable participants to transition into their new management role by helping them understand what it truly means to be in charge. It is aimed at helping managers make the shift from “doing” to “managing”.

Contents will include:

  • Mastering your new identity
  • Working with your team effectively
  • Achieving results through others: delegation  and influence.

Expected learning outcomes:

  • Define the mindset needed to effectively adjust to your new management responsibilities
  • Understand the different interventions needed to manage a team.
  • Learn different strategies on how to get the best results from others.

The program is suitable for both academic and general staff who have been recently promoted to a management role in the University within the last 12 months.

Participation in New Managers/Module 1:  Personal Leadership and Management Styles is required as a prerequisite to Module 2.

It is expected that participants attend all three modules of the New Managers’ Program including:

  • New Managers/Module 1:  Personal Leadership and Management Styles
  • New Managers/Module 2:  The Essence of Being in Charge
  • New Managers/Module 3:  Managing your Operations (early February 2008)

Participants are required to bring your Position Description with you to the workshop.

WHAT’S ON IN PR & MARKETING

Dates for your diary 2008

Pathways Day—Thursday 3 January 2008

Open Day—Saturday 13 September 2008

Open Day survey results

Just over 100 surveys were conducted on Open Day to ascertain how people heard about it, what reasons they had for attending, what they thought of the day and how they thought it could be improved in the future.

Prospective students mostly heard about Open Day from their Careers Advisors (23.4%), via word of mouth (23.4%), the MQ website (12.9%) and via the program in the Sydney Morning Herald (10.5%). For 70.4% of respondents, Open Day increased their level of interest in studying at Macquarie. For a copy of the full results please contact Michelle Riley at michelle.riley@vc.mq.edu.au

Macquarie’s Media Performance

There were 251 mentions of Macquarie University in the media during the past three weeks.

  • the audience reach spike of 3.3 million on 23 September was due to six articles in the high-circulation Sunday newspapers—four of these being profiles of Macquarie courses and students in a postgraduate supplement in the Sun Herald
  • the volume spike of 71 items on 27 September was largely due to radio syndication of interviews with Dr Felicity Cox (Linguistics) on the Australian accent and Dr Sean Turnell (Economics) on Burma/Myanmar.
