BECOME AN ACCESS MACQUARIE EXPERT

Access Macquarie Limited seeks to promote the vast wealth of knowledge and experience available at Macquarie University for expert advisory services. The role of the expert is to provide factual information either in writing, or by appearing in court or before a tribunal where a specialist opinion is required on a particular issue.

Expert advice is sought in a number of broad legal, commercial and government settings. Private sector companies seek assistance to analyse high level strategic and operational issues that cannot be readily sourced by professional consulting organisations. Experts are widely used by law firms both as expert witnesses and to provide expert interpretations and analysis in the preparation of legal opinions.

Governments also seek expert advice in public policy settings: the expert can assist the identification of legitimate arguments for government legislation and regulation as well as in assessing the potential impacts of such policies.

As recognised leaders in their professional fields, both nationally and internationally, Macquarie University academics are available through Access MQ to provide expert advice. In expanding our services to include Expert Advisory projects, Access MQ aims to support those academics whose relevant expertise is highly respected within their own discipline.

In order to establish an Expert Advisory service, we need to profile University staff to determine the capacity to provide this expertise.

If you are interested in being listed on the Expert Advice Database, please fill out the short questionnaire below, copy it to an email and send it to expertadvice@access.mq.edu.au .

IEC MUSIC PROGRAM FOR CHILDERN

The Institute of Early Childhood's Music Program for Children offers music classes for children aged from 4 months to 8 years of age.

We still have vacancies for mid-semester enrolment. Enrol now for Semester 2, beginning in August 2007.

The Music Program gives children a wonderful introduction to music. Creative musical expression is encouraged through singing, moving and dancing to music, playing musical games and exploring simple percussion instruments.

Classes for 5–8 year olds also introduce children to musical literacy. Held on Saturday mornings at Macquarie University, the program provides musical experiences which will develop your child's understandings about music, develop their musical skills and introduce reading and writing music. This program forms an excellent foundation from which to learn an instrument or join a choir.

Classes for 0–5 year olds are held on Friday and Saturday mornings and on Saturdays for 5–8 year olds at Macquarie University.

If you'd like to receive an application form for next semester, please email or phone the office, leave your mailing address and a form will be sent to you.

HARLEY WOOD ASTRONOMICAL LECTURE

The Harley Wood Lecture is an annual astronomy talk open to the public and is held during the Astronomical Society of Australia meeting.

In 2007 the lecture will be given by Professor Matthew Bailes, Director of the Swinburne University of Technology's Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing. Professor Bailes will speak on Millisecond Pulsars and Einstein's Universe.

Using 3D virtual reality technologies Professor Bailes will explain how astronomers are using giant radio telescopes to discover millisecond pulsars, objects only 20km in diameter, but with masses some 500,000 times that of Earth. These stars rotate up to 700 times a second, and emit powerful beams of radio emission. Australian astronomers are using millisecond pulsars to test Einstein's laws of gravitation and search for gravitational waves produced by inspiralling supermassive black holes.

This talk is aimed at the general public and understandable by children and adults alike.

The impact of exciting new telescopes currently being designed for construction in Western Australia will also be discussed.

.
Date: Monday 2 July
Time: 7.00pm – 8.30pm.
Venue: Mason Theatre, Building E7B
Free admission

Macquarie’s Media Performance

There were 103 mentions of Macquarie University in the media during the past three weeks. The graph below shows coverage in the media by day for the period 29 May–12 June , volume (grey bar) and audience reach (red line).

  • On 2 June, audience reach peaked at 2.6 million with a volume of just 13 items. This audience number is very high considering all items on this day were in the print media, which traditionally has lower reach than broadcast media. Five articles in The Weekend Australian (with a circulation of 299,150) contributed to the spike in audience reach. These articles included interviews with Associate Professor Graeme Russell from the Department of Psychology on the working habits of older Australians, and Professor Murray Goot on the electoral behaviour of swinging voters.
  • On 7 June, volume spiked at 120 items with an audience reach of 801,483. Due to syndication of some radio programs, these 120 items related to just 8 interviews with Macquarie staff including an interview with Dr Ian Watson from the Department of Politics and International Relations on ABC Radio’s PM program. This one interview was syndicated to 57 stations nationwide. However, as audience numbers were unavailable for some stations this contributed to the lower audience reach figure for this day.

Parent Information Evening

An information evening for parents and their children in high school will be hosted by Macquarie University from 6.00pm–8.00pm at the Macquarie Theatre on Wednesday 25 July. The speakers for the evening are Professor George Cooney AM who will speak on the UAI, Jonathan Gaston on managing stress in the HSC, and Deidre Anderson on dealing with transition. Course advice and information will also be provided on Macquarie University degree programs and pathways into university.
