MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY "YOUR SAY" STAFF SURVEY

Tim Sprague, Director Human Resources advises that the Macquarie University "Your Say" staff survey will be officially launched on March 8 by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steven Schwartz during his "Meet the Vice-Chancellor" forum.

Steven’s initial communication to staff regarding the "Your Say" staff survey is:

Dear Macquarie colleague,

I am pleased to launch the first Macquarie staff survey—"Your Say".

The survey will give both Academic and General staff a chance to voice their opinions about how well Macquarie University is functioning. It will also assist us to track the health of our organisation and identify areas for improvement.

I have asked for this survey to be run early into my time at Macquarie as one of the ways I can know the University better. One of its purposes is to take stock of how our staff feel about Macquarie and develop an understanding of our strengths and areas which need greater focus on our interactions with staff.

We are taking several steps to ensure confidentiality. The survey is anonymous and all results will be analysed by the independent Voice Project association, which has conducted similar surveys at six other universities. Only aggregated scores from groups with 10 or more respondents will be reported. Responses from individual surveys will NOT be reported. Results will be communicated to staff at Macquarie University in late May 2006.

I encourage each and every one of you to participate in the survey honestly and frankly. The more responses, the clearer the current picture of the University will be. This is a chance to have Your Say and the data we collect will contribute to our thinking on the way we shape the University into the future.

The survey will be conducted online during 13–27 March. You will receive further information on how to complete the survey in the near future.

Sincerely Yours,

Steven Schwartz,
Vice-Chancellor

Tim advises that a Your Say website has been established which includes a Key Message and Frequently Asked Questions section, as well as the link for staff to complete the survey online. This website is: www.pers.mq.edu.au/yoursay/index.html

The survey will take most people 20–25 minutes to complete.

UNISUPER SEMINARS

Frank Scarrabelotti from UniSuper will once again present a series of informative seminars for Unisuper members: Contribution Splitting on Thursday 16 March and Transition to Retirement on Tuesday 11 April.

Contribution Splitting

If you are married, or in a de-facto relationship, you will now be eligible to take part in super contribution splitting. This gives couples the opportunity to more effectively share their superannuation benefits. This seminar will provide information relating to the process of super splitting between spouses and the associated benefits such as tax advantages. The seminar will cover how placing all, or part, of your superannuation contributions into a spouse account can boost your combined retirement savings and achieve your retirement goals.

The seminar will cover:

  • what is contribution splitting
  • how it works
  • contributions that can and can't be split
  • when can members split
  • the UniSuper process to follow
  • further questions.

Date: Thursday 16 March

Time: 1.00pm–2.00pm

Venue: E6A Room 133

Registration: www.unisuper.com.au/resources/seminars.cfm

Transition to Retirement

If you are exploring your retirement options, this seminar will provide you with an alternative to leaving your job. From April 2006, UniSuper is giving members who have reached their preservation age the option to access a superannuation pension income as well as an employment income. This Transition to Retirement is a government initiative that enables you to take some of your super in the form of a non-commutable income stream (a pension that you cannot cash in) without having to retire or finish work.

This seminar focuses on the impact this approach may have on your retirement planning, retirement lifestyle, and final benefit. It explores the process involved with this strategy, including any relevant rules and regulations.

The seminar will cover:

  • government intent
  • the legislative conditions
  • the application
  • examples of potential benefits
  • legislative impacts
  • financial strategies.

Date: Tuesday 11 April

Time: 1.00pm–2.00pm

Venue: W5C Room 320

TEACHING DEVELOPMENT GRANTS

FLAGSHIP GRANTS

Applications are called for Macquarie University Strategic Curriculum Innovation Grants (MUSCIG), Teaching Development Grants (MUTDG) and initial expressions of interest are sought for Flagship Grants. The Macquarie University Strategic Curriculum Innovation Grants scheme supports the process of curriculum innovation, which extends beyond that expected of normal curriculum development.

The Teaching Development Grants support small-scale teaching development initiatives that further the University’s Teaching and Learning Plan but extend beyond the normal curriculum development activities.

Flagship Grants support a small number of substantial projects also contributing to the Teaching and Learning Plan. The focus of these projects is on significant innovation leading to improvements in the quality of teaching, learning or assessment.

A Grants Information Session will be held in E6A 116 on 28 March 2006. Please see information about the workshop by following the link.

THE LEARNING ACTIVITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (LAMS)

LAMS is a new piece of technology that helps students and staff with online collaboration and activities. We are now in our second six month period of the LAMS@Macquarie Implementation Project. The integration with WebCT at Macquarie is about to be released, and details about the project can be found at http://www.melcoe.mq.edu.au/projects/LAMS@MQ/index.htm

LAMS has been used successfully in undergraduate and postgraduate units at Macquarie in many ways. For instance it has been used as a tool for encouraging follow up questions and investigation between lectures (in Statistics), for organising small group discussions during class time and varying the delivery method during long on-campus sessions (in the post-graduate MBA program and the Bachelor of Community Management); for supporting student creation of resources, and as a tool for encouraging reflection on the design of learning itself (in undergraduate and postgraduate units in Education). The Macquarie Institute of Innovation will be using LAMS to help support its problem-based approach to its new postgraduate course, and Japanese Studies is once again using LAMS along with other technologies to improve their students’ experience online.

LAMS is complementary to WebCT and experience at Macquarie shows that it can be incorporated into online learning quite easily. Orientation time is relatively short for both staff and students.

Where staff already have well established WebCT courses, some are trialling LAMS in a strategic way, using it to maximise student interactions between classes. Some have used LAMS to focus on special investigations, brainstorm ideas, or support decision making activities in class. Education staff have used LAMS intensively right throughout the semester in one second year unit. It has been an important part of the overall assessment. Some of the strategies they used are discussed in a case study at the LAMS@MQ website http://www.melcoe.mq.edu.au/projects/LAMS@MQ/caseStudies.htm

If you are interested in LAMS, there are several LAMS training sessions scheduled, but if you would like a special presentation for your interest group or department please contact: Robyn Philip, rphilip@melcoe.mq.edu.au,  x4150.

PHARMACY NEWS

The topic for this Pharmacy News is ear problems especially swimmer's ear. The most common symptoms of swimmer’s ear are:

  • itching of the ear or ear canal
  • pain, which may be more severe by moving head or pulling at the ear
  • a foul-smelling yellow or green discharge
  • reduced hearing.

Should these symptoms occur it is best to consult your doctor regarding treatment.

However, there are strategies that may help prevent the problem:

  • irrigation of the ear with a 1:1 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and vinegar or ear drops that are ready made up available from a pharmacy. These should be used immediately after swimming. This solution helps to remove water and lower the pH of the ear canal, making the environment less hospitable for bacteria
  • wearing earplugs when swimming
  • shaking water from ears after swimming
  • avoid swimming in dirty or polluted water
  • drying ears thoroughly after exposure to water
  • not inserting cotton buds and fingers into ears.

If you would like further information please do not hesitate to call in at the University Pharmacy. We would be pleased to help you with further information and suitable products.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Research Writing: Abstracts and Introductions

In this workshop we focus on a strategic analysis of these two important components of a research article. Participants will analyse and evaluate examples from published articles, and organise the facts for an abstract and introduction of their own.

Date : Monday 6 March

1.30pm–4.30pm

E6A 116 (morning session is full)

Facilitator: Dr Alan Jones

Enquiries: Anna Reid, x9780, anna.reid@vc.mq.edu.au

Developing a Research Program

This workshop is specifically designed for early career academics and those who are wanting to boost their research activity. It is about the strategic planning of an entire research program. It will look at the entire work of an academic and how to plan for, and implement, a program of research that is sustainable over the next few years.

Having a purposeful research agenda is only one prerequisite for developing a research program in any domain. It is essential that the researcher determines priorities, in order to sequence supporting activities such as funding and publication strategies. By the conclusion of this workshop, participants will have identified appropriate gaps in their research field so that they can exploit those gaps, and strategically develop their research track record.

Date: Tuesday 7 March , 9.30am–11.30am   E6A 116

Facilitator and Enquiries: Anna Reid, x9780

By the end of the workshop you will have had the opportunity to:

  • review your resume and write a covering letter
  • practise addressing selection criteria
  • discuss tips for preparing for a job interview.
