to_top LEARNING AND TEACHING ONLINE - 
   ARE YOU PREPARED?

Many members of staff are now considering adding a web site with online communication tools to their teaching units. Some staff members launch into this new educational experience without really understanding the implications for themselves and their students.

The Centre for Flexible Learning (CFL) offers a short course that can help staff better prepare themselves. As one staff member said after attending the course: "The technology is merciless in dealing with the untrained and unprepared!"

If you are interested in improving your understanding of communication online, we highly recommend Learning and Teaching Online. Staff who have completed the course have commented positively on their exposure to the technology. By directly experiencing the technology for themselves, participants discover its positive and negative aspects, and go on to develop their own online teaching strategies.

The course runs over six weeks, and there are only two face-to-face sessions. The rest of the time participants discuss issues online. Participants are put in the position of the student and learn how to manage their time as an online learner, and how to use WebCT bulletin board, mail and chat facilities.

VALE KEITH CAIRNCROSS


Keith Cairncross died on Thursday 15 February after a long illness. Keith Cairncross' association with the University commenced in 1967 when as Director of Research at Riker Laboratory he assisted the infant School of Biological Sciences to set up the teaching of Physiology. He joined the permanent staff of Macquarie in 1969. Keith retired from Macquarie in 1993 as Associate Professor in the School of Biological Sciences. During his career, he was recognised as a leading international pharmacologist for his research into the physiology and treatment of depression.

Keith's friends and colleagues at Macquarie remember him with admiration and affection.
 

to_top NEW EDITOR FOR MACQUARIE NEWS

This week the Public Relations and Marketing Unit welcomed new staff member Jane Hyde. Jane has taken up the editorship of Macquarie University News, the University's monthly magazine. Her appointment is for three days a week.

A graduate of the universities of Queensland (BA) and London (Diploma in Information Studies), Jane brings to the job the experiences of a diverse career that wends its way in decades: ten years as a librarian and editor in Brisbane, London and Sydney, ten as a senior public servant working for NSW government ministers and agencies, and ten as a writer, editor and analyst specialising in planning and communications. Her many clients have included Mayne Nickless, the University of Queensland, the NSW Department of Education and Training and the Institute of Public Administration (Australia).

Jane also teaches writing and is a published author of fiction. Her novella The Place at the Coast was made into a feature film starring the late John Hargreaves. Her play Absence received a professional reading by the Queensland Theatre Company in 1998 and ran equal second in the Colonial Bank/Stables Theatre awards for playwrights in 1999. You can read one of her stories in Women/Sex/Love, edited by Susan Johnson for Vintage.

As editor of Maquarie University News, Jane will be responsible for ensuring that the magazine carries news, features and general information that inform and entertain all the members of the Macquarie community. The first issue under her editorship will appear in April. Jane looks forward to meeting you all and hearing your news and views. Attention postgraduate students, academics and supervisors: start building your body of published work now!

Postgraduate Forum, Campus Review's innovative showcase of postgraduate work in Australia, resumes its monthly publication soon. The Forum started last year and had submissions from postgraduates from around Australia across many disciplines. The Forum is a great way to begin a resume of printed work, which will be read by academics, administrators and postgraduates around the country and overseas.

You can contribute to the Forum by writing up to 1500 words on your work-in-progress. Contributors should outline their area of research, describe what they have discovered, relate that to the broader context of their discipline, and explain any ramifications and outcomes of their work.

Contributions are welcome from all postgraduates, in any discipline. Academics are also invited to contribute work that has implications for postgraduate study.

to_top STAFF BIBLE STUDY AT LUNCHTIME

Every Tuesday, from 1.00 to 2.00pm in C5C 238 during term time, a small number of Christian staff from various denominations meets together to study God's Word and pray. I know that in the busy-ness of the university it is hard to join us, and even harder to be regular, but please feel welcome to meet with us if you can.

This semester we will be digging into the Gospel of Matthew. Our first meeting will be on Tuesday 6 March. This is not a lecture format, but rather sharing together as we look at a portion of the Bible and pray for each other. Also feel free to contact me if I can be of help to you as you strive to live Christianly in the midst of the hectic University environment.

Sometimes student Christian groups ask me whether there are Christian staff from the different faculties who might be interested in talking with students about the challenges of living as a Christian while working in that particular area. to_top EARTHQUAKES AND EMERGENCY AID

The death toll of the recent earthquake in India is expected to be over 30,000. Tens of thousands more are injured. Hundreds of thousands of people are homeless.

On the other side of the world, in El Salvador, more than 1 million people are still dealing with the effects of the earthquake and landslide some weeks ago. Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders or MSF) rush staff to locations where such disasters occur. In many remote areas, MSF are the first in with medical aid. In India, in El Salvador, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, East Timor, Angola and elsewhere, during emergencies and after, it is only with donations that MSF can be there to save lives.

An urgent tax deductible gift to Medecins Sans Frontieres has been requested by them so they can provide these life-saving services, when and where they're needed most. MSF is a non-profit humanitarian organisation.

Biosafety Issues, Research and Teaching
CPD workshop is open to academic and technical staff, and Honours and Postgraduate students working in or advising those who work in areas involving biosafety issues. This includes both research and teaching projects.

The workshop has been designed to provide participants with up-to-date information about the relevant legislative and policy frameworks within which researchers and institutions must operate with regard to biosafety issues, and to update participants on the policies and procedures of the Biosafety Committee. Discussion and questions from participants will be encouraged, regarding general issues, particular teaching or research projects or Biosafety Committee applications. Case studies of good and poor practice will be used to illustrate issues of concern.

Participants will also be encouraged to think more broadly about what it means to be an ethical researcher, and information will be provided as to the relevant external and internal policies and guidelines covering this area.

The workshop will involve short presentations from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), the Chair of the Biosafety Committee, and the Biosafety Officer, as well as ample opportunities for open discussion and questions. Lunch will be provided at 12.30pm.

Welcome to New Staff
A Welcome to New Staff is held at the beginning of each year, with the purpose of familiarising new staff with the University. The program will include a welcome address from the Vice-Chancellor, followed by the introduction of the University Executive and Senior Staff, several of whom will also address staff. Time as an Asset, Not a Liability
When was the last time you heard yourself say: "I would love to do that, but I don't have the time!" What would you give to be able to find one free extra hour's worth of time every day, at no extra cost to yourself?

In these times of ever increasing demands, wouldn't it be great to have time as an asset, rather than the one thing there always seems to be too little of? What can we do to create extra/virtual time, to do what we need to do, and what we want to do?

In this workshop we will look at different beliefs and approaches which often limit us in how we can use our time, and explore ways for managing it more powerfully and effectively.

The workshop is suitable for both academic and general staff.

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is offering scholarships for the 2001/2002 academic year to Australian university students or graduates. The scholarships can be allocated as long-term (one academic year, 8-12 months) or as short-term (2-3 months). There is an age limit of 38 years. Awards can be used to attend the following courses:

DIVISION OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION SCIENCES: Division Manager (Full-time (continuing)) - Ref. 5871. The Division of Information and Communication Sciences is responsible for the achievement of the University's educational, research and community outreach goals within the academic discipline areas of Computing, Electronics, Mathematics and Physics. The Manager participates fully in the Division's functions at an executive level, including carrying responsibility for management of administrative and technical services, and for the provision of financial and resource planning and other operational support to the Head of Division. The Manager will review and upgrade management systems in the Division including personnel, financial and asset management, security and risk management, information and Division support services.

Applicants must have tertiary qualifications in an area relevant to the Division, professional training combined with proved expertise and experience in the management of significant human, materiel and financial resources and projects, demonstrated capacity for independent judgement of a high level, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, detailed knowledge of administrative systems and processes, experience in management and administration in a Higher Education institution, broad technical knowledge in one or more of the Division's technology areas, and awareness of equal opportunity and occupational health and safety issues.

Department of Physics: Research Fellow (Laser Cleaning) (Full-time (fixed-term)) - Ref. 19068. The laser cleaning group is seeking a Research Fellow to carry out scientific studies of the removal of micro- and nano- particles from surfaces. The science covers physics, optics, lasers and materials. The focus is to develop the technology for photonic, optic and optoelectronic components. The appointee will utilise the excimer laser facility to conduct experiments, analyse the results and produce/assist to produce publications and reports. Applicants must have a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant area of experimental physics or engineering, proved research ability, experience with computers in the scientific context, the ability to work independently and cooperatively with others and have good verbal and written communication skills. Preference will be given to applicants with a demonstrated ability to develop theory to aid analysis of experimental results, and relevant postdoctoral experience.

Research Fellow (Semiconductor Lasers): (Full-time (fixed-term)) - Ref. 19069. A Research Fellow is sought to work on a new research program to develop and characterise integrated semiconductor lasers. The focus is to develop optical feedback insensitive and broad bandwidth optical frequency comb devices. The appointee will utilise a well-equipped semiconductor laser laboratory to characterise devices supplied by collaborative partners, assist in designing further devices, analyse results and produce/assist production of publications and reports. Applicants must have a PhD (or equivalent) in laser physics or engineering (preferably semiconductor lasers), proved research ability, experience with computers in the scientific context, the ability to work independently and cooperatively with others and have good verbal and written communication skills. Preference will be given to applicants with a demonstrated ability or potential to develop as partner investigators in international collaboration as the project involves two partner groups in the United Kingdom.

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS OFFICE: Security Services Shift Supervisor (Full-time (continuing)) - Ref. 19066/19067. Two positions are available. The Shift Supervisors will coordinate and supervise the security shift resources necessary to ensure the effective protective security, attendant, and traffic and parking services for Macquarie University and to provide a safe environment to staff, students and other persons using University grounds and facilities - in a manner which is sensitive to all cultures. The Shift Supervisors will be responsible for the supervision of in-house and outsourced services personnel, operating in three shifts to provide twenty-four hour security, crime prevention, investigations and campus patrols. The Security Services area is currently under review. Applicants must have relevant tertiary qualifications and/or extensive industry and supervisory experience; current Security Industry Licence 1A/B/C; Occupational First Aid Certificate; a current NSW Class C Driver's Licence; demonstrated supervisory skills and ability to provide effective leadership in emergency first responses; ability to tactfully conduct investigations and apply basic investigation techniques; effective written and oral communication skills; willingness and capacity to use computers; ability to exercise tact and restraint, and to react calmly and effectively under diverse conditions; ability to interface and supervise pro-actively and cooperatively with contract security services on campus; capacity to undertake manual handling tasks; ability to apply Equal Employment Opportunity and Occupational Health and Safety principles.

An applicants Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification as authorised by Section 14 of the Anti Discrimination Act 1977. The appointee will provide financial and administration support to the Head of Department as well as coordinating administration of the block-release program for students and, supervising and coordinating all administrative functions and services to the Department. Applicants must have relevant tertiary qualifications with at least two years relevant work experience, or equivalent work experience. OFFICE OF THE VICE-CHANCELLOR: Dean of Graduate Studies (Research) - Ref. 17185 (Re-advertised ). Applications are invited from academic members of staff at level D or E for appointment to a fixed-term position of Dean of Graduate Studies (Research). Appointment will be for an initial period of three years with the possibility of extension for a further three year term following review. The Dean of Graduate Studies (Research) will be a distinguished academic with a strong and established research record, very good standing in postgraduate teaching and research supervision, extensive knowledge of the research context of the Australian higher education system as well as the Macquarie system, and strong skills in organisation and communication. The Dean will report to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and will also be required to carry out relevant projects from time to time under the leadership of other members of the Executive. Within this context, the Dean will be a key leader in the Development of policy for research training, particularly:
 

The conditions of appointment will be negotiated with the successful candidate and his or her Head of Division. As an indication, it is anticipated that the appointment as Dean will constitute less than a full-time commitment and that the Dean will continue teaching and research in his or her Division on a reduced basis. DIVISION OF SOCIETY, CULTURE, MEDIA AND PHILOSOPHY: Department of Media and Communication: Macquarie University Centre for International Communication Administrator (Full-time (continuing)) - Ref. 16377. The Macquarie University Centre for International Communication offers local and off-shore coursework and research degree programs in the fields of media, public affairs and international relations and is at the forefront of research in the field of International Communication and Media. The Centre also publishes The Journal of International Communication, a leading journal in the field of International Communication. The appointee will support the Director in managing the day to day administration of the Centre. This will involve liaising with staff, students and University officers on a wide range of issues, including enrolment of local and international students, supporting and assisting students throughout their program, developing administrative protocols in liaison with the Centre's overseas partners, co-ordinating the Centre's publicity and promotional material and assisting with the appointment of teaching personnel and financial administration.

Applicants must have a relevant degree and/or equivalent administrative experience, preferably in a tertiary institution and basic financial administration skills. Applicants must also have a high level of communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, a high level of negotiation skills, the ability to prioritise work and to meet strict deadline with attention to detail, good information technology skills (word processing database management, web and e-mail) and a sensitivity to the needs of people from non-english speaking background.
