The PWRG undertakes specialised research on various aspects of produced water ranging from development and evaluation of sampling and analytical methods and protocols to detailed physical, chemical and biological characterisation of produced waters as well as evaluation of such waters for beneficial use. The inter-disciplinary research niche offered by the PWRG reflects our scientific and technical capabilities as well as our access to well maintained field equipment and advanced analytical facilities for addressing complex water quality issues associated with produced water. The following research topics reflect the PWRG’s key research themes:
- Geochemical, organic, and isotopic composition of coal seam gas and coal mining co-produced waters
- Functional ecosystem requirements to maintain ground water and aquifer quality
- Remediation of contaminated groundwaters (reactive barriers) and source contaminated zones (fixation/stabilisation)
- Classification of coal seam gas and coal mining co-produced waters
- Physical and chemical impacts of brine on soil
