Each year the director and deputy directors call for applications from across MQ departments to participate in the ECR mentoring program of the Centre. Three to four ECR’s will be selected each year to participate in annual committee meetings and contribute to the success of the centre. ECR’s are particularly encouraged to help engage young researchers, through informal outreach activities as well as during the bi-annually held workshops. The 2015-2016 ECRs in the mentoring program are:
Gemma Carroll
PhD candidate, Department of Biological Sciences,
Behavioural and physiological adaptations of marine animals (especially little penguins) to the environment.
Maria Vozzo
PhD candidate, Department of Biological Sciences
Benthic ecology, habitat-forming species, oyster restoration, ecosystem services of oysters
Thomas Mortlock
PhD, Environmental Sciences
Wave, hydrodynamic and sediment transport modelling; Coastal processes and engineering; Shelf oceanography, Topographic and bathymetric surveying
PhD student, Biological Sciences
Coastal armouring through seawalls, and their effect on diversity, carbon movement, habitat functioning and sedimentary shorelines.
Past ECRs:
Dr Deepa Ruth Varkey
Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Sciences
Marine microbiology and molecular biology (marine cyanobacteria: ecological distribution, environmental stress response, proteomics and transcriptomics)
"As an ECR representative on the management panel of the MQMarine Research Centre, I had the opportunity to learn the skills required for the management of the Centre. It provided excellent first-hand experience in the development, planning and organisation of the Centre’s events. It is a great opportunity to interact, exchange ideas and expertise within a multidisciplinary team."
