Inaugural Centre director announced: industry expert appointed at The Centre for the Health Economy
Sydney, January 12, 2015: Professor Mark Gabbott, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE), has announced the appointment of Dr Henry Cutler as Director of the Macquarie University Centre for the Health Economy (MUCHE).
"I'm delighted to welcome Dr Cutler to the campus. Since establishing the Centre last year, we have worked with academics across the Faculty of Human Sciences and FBE to develop and refine its key focus areas and to maximise the opportunity both internally and externally.
"Now with Dr Cutler's extensive industry expertise, under his leadership I have no doubt the Centre will make a significant contribution to the University as a whole," said Professor Gabbott.
Dr Cutler will specifically focus on economic research into the National Disability Insurance Scheme, Health Financing, Mental Health, Workforce, eHealth, Aged Care, Medical R&D and Medical Technology. In addition, the Centre will provide much-needed economic evaluation resources for many research projects across the campus.
"Given the need to provide detailed program evaluation and cost benefit analysis of new technologies in many areas of the health sector I'm sure he will be a highly sought after resource," said Professor Gabbott.
Dr Cutler's most recent role was as the national health economics lead at KPMG. His portfolio focused on economic evaluation, policy analysis, and forecasting in health care for state and federal government, for profit and not-for-profit organisations. Prior to KPMG, he established the Sydney health economics and social policy team for Access Economics.
Throughout his career, Dr Cutler has undertaken major projects on hospitals, health financing, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, the health workforce, pathology, telehealth, preventative health care, workplace health and safety legislation, and mental health care.
"When coupled with the expertise from the recently relocated Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI) and the new Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Macquarie University now has a formidable offering to organisations seeking expert knowledge and applied research in health.
