Dementia and injury-related hospitalisations
Injury-related hospitalisations in people with dementia – causes, consequences and costs
Project members - Macquarie University
Rebecca Mitchell Associate Professor
Project main description
Individuals with dementia have higher hospitalisation rates than individuals without dementia, and injury has recently been shown to be the most common cause of hospitalisation for people with dementia. Despite this, little is known about the hospitalisation experience for people with dementia who have sustained an injury.
This research involves a retrospective epidemiological study that is using linked hospitalisation and mortality data of individuals aged 50 years and older to investigate the impact of dementia on patient outcomes for injury-related hospitalisation in NSW across a 10 year period. A one year look-back period is being used to identify patient comorbidities. Estimates of the cost of care for injury for dementia suffers will also be derived. Findings from this research will provide much needed information on the impact of injury on the person with dementia and the health system more generally.
