National symposium to make hospital systems safer
National Medication Safety Symposium at Macquarie University on 21 September 2022
New world first research showing the impact of electronic medication management (eMM) systems on the rate of errors that occur during the prescribing of medication in paediatric hospitals will be released at the National Medication Safety Symposium at Macquarie University on 21 September 2022.
The research by Macquarie University measured the rate and severity of medication prescribing errors in two large paediatric hospitals after the introduction of a new eMM system, pointing the way for safer care for children.
Medication errors are a recognised and persistent problem in hospitals with figures showing each person in hospital can experience one medication error during their stay. Worldwide, the World Health Organization estimates the cost associated with medication errors to be $42 billion USD and in Australia the cost to the health system is estimated at $1.4 billion AUD annually.
The research was funded by an NHMRC Partnership Project, led by Professor Johanna Westbrook (pictured) from the Australian Institute of Health Innovation at Macquarie University, with partners Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network and eHealth NSW.
The NSW Health Secretary Susan Pearce will open the event which will include keynote addresses from patient safety expert, Professor Westbrook, and Dr Mark Simpson, Chief Clinical Information Officer and eHealth Executive Director, Clinical Engagement and Patient Safety, eHealth NSW.
