Leading AI and health experts converge on Macquarie

The Centre for Health Informatics celebrates 21 years

Australia’s longest running health informatics research group is celebrating its 21st anniversary with leading health and AI experts at a symposium on 11 July 2022 at Macquarie University, Sydney.

Professor Enrico Coiera founded the Centre for Health Informatics as a university-based research group in 2000 and moved to Macquarie University in 2014 as part of the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI), an internationally recognised research powerhouse.

Digital health experts will be speaking on topics including the challenges and opportunities of AI in healthcare. Attendance is available on campus at Macquarie University or online. Recordings will also be available.

Professor Coiera said:

We are firmly fixed on creating the next generation of innovations that are needed if our health system is to meet the waves of challenge now washing over it, from COVID-19 to climate change.

The official welcome for this event will be given by Professor S. Bruce Dowton, the Vice-Chancellor of Macquarie University with Professor Michael Kidd AM, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer and Principal Medical Advisor with the Australian Government Department of Health following as the invited keynote speaker.

Professor Coiera will present his keynote considering two decades of digital transformation in healthcare at the Centre Health Informatics, with Professor Patrick McNeil, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Medicine and Health at Macquarie University opening the second session showcasing ground-breaking research and industry-changing successes from the Centre for Health Informatics team leads: Professor Farah Magrabi, Professor Shlomo Berkovsky and Dr Annie Lau.

Members of the Centre for Health Informatics highly esteemed alumni will present after lunch, introduced by Professor Sakkie Pretorius, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Macquarie University: Professor Johanna Westbrook, Professor Vitali Sintchenko and Associate Professor Adam Dunn.

After lunch a panel discussion considering the Centre for Health Informatics’ place in the world of informatics and digital health research, will be facilitated by Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite, AIHI Founding Director. The panel will include:

  • Professor Wendy Chapman – Centre for Digital Transformation of Health
  • Dr David Hansen – CEO and Research Director of the Australian e-Health Research Centre at CSIRO
  • Associate Professor Clair Sullivan – Queensland Digital Health Research Network at the Centre for Health Services Research, The University of Queensland
  • Associate Professor Adam Dunn – Head of Biomedical Informatics and Digital Health, School of Medical Sciences, University of Sydney
  • Dr Louise Schaper – CEO Australasian Institute of Digital Health
