Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite
Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite appointed as a National Health and Medical Research Council’s Research Committee
Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite of the Australian Institute of Health Innovation, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, has been appointed by the Minister of Health and Minister of Sport, the Hon Sussan Ley, MP, as a member of the National Health and Medical Research Council’s Research Committee for the triennium July 2015-June 2018. This is the peak body in Australia advising the Council on matters relating to medical research and public health research, and additionally makes recommendations to the Council on the assistance provided from the Medical Research Endowment Account.
This is a rare honour. Whilst there are many health and medical researchers in Australia, only a limited number are ever asked to join such a key body. Speaking about his appointment, Professor Braithwaite indicated he was delighted to accept the invitation: “I am excited and honoured to have been chosen by the Minister to join Research Committee. As a health services researcher, I hope to be able to bring a vital perspective to Research Council. This is not so much recognition for me, as a testament to all the wonderful people with whom I’ve researched and taught with over the years, and particularly my superb colleagues and staff at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation. This comes at a marvellous time—just when my home University, Macquarie University, has formed a new Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and there are exciting plans for new teaching programs and research studies.”
Professor Braithwaite is one of Australia’s leading health services and systems researcher with an international reputation for his work investigating and contributing to systems improvement. He has expertise in the culture and structure of acute settings, leadership, management and change in health sector organisations, quality and safety in health care, accreditation and surveying processes in international context and the restructuring of health services. Professor Braithwaite has published extensively, and he has presented at or chaired international and national conferences, workshops, symposia and meetings on more than 600 occasions, including over 70 keynote addresses.
