Guide to Health Informatics 3rd Edition released

Guide to Health Informatics 3rd Edition released

Guide to health informatics

Professor Enrico Coiera is proud to announce the release of his 3rd edition of the "Guide to Health Informatics". He commenced the first edition almost 20 years ago, and released the second more than 10 years ago.

The book is used widely internationally for students in health informatics courses, with past editions translated into Spanish and Italian. This edition is 50% longer than the previous 2003 edition reflecting the many changes in the field over the last decade. The book has a strong emphasis on demonstrating what works and what does not work in informatics. Professor Coiera has created a new evaluative framework that runs through the book, to help us understand why some classes of intervention appear to work so much better than others. The new chapters are each quite extensive in length, and focus as much as possible on basic concepts and principles, rather than simple narrative descriptions of the topics.

New chapters include:

  • implementation
  • information system safety
  • social networks and social media interventions
  • model building for decision support, data analysis and scientific discovery
  • population surveillance and public health informatics
  • clinical bioinformatics and personalised medicine
  • consumer informatics

The book is strongly influenced by the work of AIHI researchers in CHSSR and CHI.

Past editions of the "Guide to Health Informatics" have been very well reviewed, with some comments including:

1st edition -

"...should be required reading for every physician intending to enter a fellowship program in medical informatics, and it is also highly recommended to every doctor and medical student interested in this emerging medical specialty." — JAMA

2nd edition -

"A simply brilliant introduction to this fast developing field which is comprehensive, up to date, and at the same time sophisticated... It should be read by all healthcare professionals." — 2004 BMA Book Awards Judging Panel

The 3rd Edition of the Guide to Health Informatics is available in paper and e-book versions. Purchase of the print version comes bundled with access to the e-book version. It can be ordered from the publisher, Amazon UK or Amazon US, and other bookstores (ISBN-13:978-1444170498). If you wish to purchase the e-book only, several options are available including time-limited rental, as well as full purchase, and bulk purchase for classes.

The ebook was released March 5 and the print version of the book is available from March 12 2015 for UK readers, and slightly later in other countries. The latest expected date for US readers is April 15. Complimentary textbook e-inspection copies are available to qualifying instructors for review prior to course adoption.
