On Friday 21 April 2017, Professor Sir Liam Donaldson delivered the second in the Executive Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences lecture series addresses. His thought provoking and engaging lecture dealt with endemic quality problems in health systems around the world.

Professor Patrick McNeil, Executive Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, invites you to attend the Executive Dean’s Lecture to be delivered by Sir Liam Donaldson on Friday 21 April 2017.

Sir Liam Donaldson is recognised as an international champion of public health and patient safety. He was the foundation chair of the World Health Organisation’s World Alliance for Patient Safety, launched in 2004. He is a past vice-chairman of the World Health Organisation Executive Board. He is now the World Health Organisation’s Envoy for Patient Safety, Chairman of the Independent Monitoring for the Global Polio Eradication Programme, as well as Chairman of the Transition Monitoring Board of this Programme. In the UK, he is Professor of Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Honorary Distinguished Professor at Cardiff University, Associate Fellow in the Centre on Global Health Security at Chatham House, and Chancellor of Newcastle University.

We are delighted to have Sir Liam Donaldson present the first Executive Dean's Lecture for 2017.

The Executive Dean’s Lecture Series was established to illuminate the relationships between medical teaching and research, clinical practice and patient care. It is an opportunity for health professionals, educators, policy makers, patients and researchers to engage on key issues and advance health care to improve lives.

Lecture title: Global Perspectives on Patient Safety

Abstract: Despite the priority given to reducing the avoidable harm associated with healthcare worldwide, sustained areas of improvement in patient safety have been few in number. Why has healthcare been so unsuccessful compared to other high-risk industries? This session will review the current patient safety landscape and consider the need for new directions.
